I'm planning on getting an old generation xbox and use it for media center and would appreciate any help and direction on how to do this.

I had my wii modded and I'm a happy Wii person now. Although have not figure out how to get it play dvd and possibly streaming media over network connection if that's possible.

You would be better served to just cobbled together a very cheap PC for the task. XBMC on Xbox has limitations, and the hardware itself is useless for handling most HD content.
