XBOX360 won't turn on

Ok so my friend gave me his old 360 and told me its mine if i can get it to work. The AC adapter is tested and its fine. The first thing i noticed is that it looks like the power button got smashed in because it wouldn't click. I removed the front panel and got it to click by pressing the button with a screw driver but still nothing.

Im thinking that even though it clicks something got bashed in on the front power button or the small board that its on.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Is there a way to start the xbox any other way to see if it works?

if i google anything about repairing an xbox all i get is a bunch of stuff about the RROD. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Do you have the controller that he had with it? If you do, it will be synced to the system. Hold down the "gem" in the middle (The green X) for like 4 second, and that'll turn the system on. If that works, you know the power button is busted

This.

Or press the eject button (pretty sure that turns it on), and then you can sync any controller you want to it. You don't even really need to fix it if it's just the power button broken. You can always use a controller to turn it on and off. Or you could use a Harmony remote, or the non-Harmony 360 remote.

I'm thinking that his friend would have known that you can turn it on with the controller, and would not have given the system to him if it worked by doing that.

he already has the old controller hooked up to his new xbox so thats out. I tried the eject button, nothing.

its gotta be something inside. The console is out of warranty and even if it was id rather just try to fix it myself. I opened the 360 up just to see if anything stuck out at me. I noticed one of the front USB slots is busted. Could this have anything to do with it?

Also i have never experienced one before but could this have been a RROD? Maybe it happened and he didnt notice it and now its completely dead? or would it never fully die it he got a RROD?

If you're getting NO response from it at all, then it's likely a power issue. The AC Adapter may be fine, but it could be a slew of other things.

Even if the power button or the USB ports were screwed up, the lights on the front would still come on to give you an error code if it prevented the system from working properly. Unfortunately, it sounds like something that won't be fixable unless you have the balls to replace a blown resistor or capacitor or something.

If it's out of warranty, just open it up and look for scorch marks or something.

MS will fix it for $105? final cost, and you get a full coverage 12 months warranty. I think they included a month of live too. Or sell it as is, and put the cash toward a jasper based arcade, or make it a DYI project as suggested, that is probably the cheapest route cash wise, but if your time=money like many people fell it does, then calculate that into the equation.

Maybe not to turn it on, but when that baby freezes up in the middle of a game and you're scrambling to get to the XBox before the videocard completely burns up only to find out the power button doesn't work, that won't be fun. :frown:

Did you take the 360 apart yet? A physical inspection may turn up an answer. It could turn up a loose wire or you may find that the issue is a faulty switch.

Well if you hit the eject button and no power, then there's something internal and more than just a broken switch on the power button. The eject sends a signal to turn on the 360 and open the tray.

Call up MS and finding out how much it'll cost to fix it - spending $100 on a 360 is better than $300. :)

Are you absolutely sure the power supply is okay?
I have a similar issue with my 360 every now and then.

Unplug the power supply from the wall and from the console (important!), wait a couple of seconds, then reconnect.
See if it starts.

power supply is ok. Does anyone know if the 360 will work with the rf adapter removed?
