Hi I'm finding this information out for my friend since he's pretty computer illiterate...
Relevant summary information in bold. The rest is just more detailed along with my curious questions.
Anyway here's the deal. He has a 2wire Homeportal 1000 dsl modem set up upstairs at his place connected to a main computer. His room is downstairs, and he uses a HPNA connection from his room to a usb adapter that goes into his computer (RJ-11 jack -> HPNA adapter -> usb into his computer). He also has a xbox360 in his room he wants to connect to the internet as well, but the usb adapter doesn't work with it. He wants to be able to connect both his computer and the 360 at the same time in any way possible, HPNA or not.
Is there an ethernet adapter for HPNA that has two ethernet jacks so he can have one going to his 360 and another to his computer? And would that work for the 360? Otherwise what should he do?
1. Get a newer 2wire modem that has wireless built into it + 2x wireless adapters
2. Get a wireless router + 2x wireless adapters
-edit-
I just thought of a 3rd option:
3. Since he's connected right now through his HPNA usb adapter, could he connect a crossover (or just regular cat5 cable since i think the 360 will take care of the rest) from his pc to the 360, and enable internet connection sharing? If he does this it'd be the cheapest for sure since all he'd need would be to buy a NIC.
I have no idea which is the cheaper option. I'm sure he's thinking the cheaper the better.
I had no idea what he meant by 2wire dsl setup until I looked it up online and found out about HPNA lol.
Me and a couple other people had suggested that he get a wireless router, but I was wondering would that work if he connected the 2wire modem to the router? Or should he just get a new modem that has wireless capabilities? If he got a new modem or got a router to go with his current modem, he would have to spend some extra money on a couple of wireless adapters for his pc and x360. Oh well either way he'll have to spend some more to get those wireless adapters, so I'm wondering if there's a solution with a HPNA bridge with two ethernet jacks instead. So far all the solutions I've seen only have a single ethernet port and a pass through RJ-11 jack. Unless they are more or less about the same I would suggest he go for a wireless router + 2x adapters route. Getting a new modem would require having to register it with his provider I think, which is more trouble than I think he is looking for.
