xbox360 vs x850xtpe

my friend has a x850xtpe and he says that his video card is better at running graphics than the xbox 360. I told him that it is not and one of his reasons is that nvidia/ati/whatever the maker of the xbox360 video processing wouldnt give xbox 360 a better card for cheap to be able to sell it for 300 dollars (they would sell at a loss). i realize that the video cards now would dominate the xbox 360 but the old x850xtpe would get owned, someone slap some sense into this guy please

I'd give the nod (by far) to the 48 unified shaders in the xb360. It will only get worse as programmers move more that way (ie DX 10)

Actually no video card dominates the xbox360, even an 1900 isnt at the same level.. as for your friend LOL seriously, whats up with these "friends" we hear of nowadays? Tell your friend maybe the point of a console is being alot cheaper than a pc? Who would by an xbox if the card alne costed 300$ +?

Edit - Wow, troll?

Then how exactly does Microsoft obtain these "SUPERIOR" graphics from ati/nvidia for such a low price. To sell the xbox360 for 400 dollars and make a profit, they must be supplying the video card to microsoft for sub $100. If this truly is the case, wouldn't we expect to see dell, alienware, cyberpower, newegg, etc, supplying the PC world with this "awesomely super powerful made up" graphics ability for sub $100. Please link me to where I can buy a graphic card better than the 1900 for less than 100 dollars and you won't be contrinuing to waste my time. Kthx.

Maybe your friend is the same ex-friend I had a dispute with in another thread ? Quite possible...lol

Okay. First of all, M$ is selling the X360 at a loss. It's also their last stradegy and has also been Sony's stradegy. Secondly, it's a GPU not a video card. And yes, teh X360 is currently kicking some arese in the Graphics department. There probably won't be a better grapincs card until the G80 and the R600 series cards. And not only is the X360's GPU more powerful than the X850XTPE it also beats it in image quality with HDR and SM3 support.

The reason the GPU in the xbox360 is so cheap, is because it doesn't have any (or very little?) of ram on it. I think that's the most expensive part of the vidcard: the onboard ram. Since the xGPU uses the system ram for it's texture storage and buffering, it needs no on-card ram.

And yes, the xGPU > x850XTPE

The 360 is using an ATI 500 series card. It's comparable to an X1800XT. The issue with costs is 3 fold.
1: Microsoft mass produces 360's as a means of cutting costs. Microsoft has contracts with ATI and IBM to order their parts in great bulk at a discount.
2: Despite getting a discount with ordering at bulk, Microsoft takes a considerable loss on each $400 360 sold in an attempt to get units into gamers' homes.
3: When Nvidia and ATI sell a video card for a PC in the retail chain, they turn a profit.

Oblivion is a good showcase of what $400 can get you. The 360 does HDR + AA which most nividia cards and X850XT cards can't. The XT is a great value for about $150, but it really isn't in the same league as the 500 series.

Hm, is it really? I thought xenos was a unified 48 "pipe" architecture that pretty much kills anything currently available, and r600 will be sort of a "second generation" based on it? Either way, it surely beats whatever nvidia has put on PS3

all an xbox350 is meant to do is run games. it's all integrated and everything was specifically meant to run with the other. it's a pure gaming machine with some other things thrown in. a computer has millions of other things to do other than gaming. graphics cards must be compatible with the other hardware to run properly with the right software configured to use it. you dont have to worry about any of that with a gaming console. and remember this is still just the FIRST GEN of games

Technically, it ISNT comparable to the R500 series or any GPU out there yet.

I'd assume peformance would be around X1800XT performance, maybe a bit faster.

Architecture wise, however, it's completely different and is based on the next-generation ATI R600, just alot slower.

So yes, it's considerably faster than an X850XT.
