XBOX360 vs PC

I was just looking at screen shots of XBOX 360 games... I notice they are flawless, and look no different than a very high end PC... Just look at oblivion for example.

At 1/4 the price of a high end computer, whats the point to building a PC?

Lets say the machine was ONLY for gaming, no school work, no internet no nothing. JUST gaming, plain and simple.

Is the lack of 'control' over a console that sways us towards a PC?

Depends on the games you play. If you're into sports and racing games, then go for it. If you're into FPS, PC wins. MMOs, PC wins. RPGs and adventure games... well, it depends. In Obivion, you don't get to use all the mods that are made by fans out there.

I have both... but the problem is, i played Oblivion and Dreamfall on my PC. My 360 still hasn't been opened yet (i've had it over a month now!). I'm waiting for Prey.... although i may just go to Blockbuster and pick up a game real soon just to test and make sure my 360 isn't DOA!

A couple matters of note(whether these are deciding factors is up to you):

The mod scene. PC people get immediate access to a huge amount of good third party stuff. The console guys get that late, if ever.

Mouse + keyboard > * Some consoles can support mouse and keyboard; but they usually emphasize the controller. This brings us to another problem:

Game Selection. Console fighting and racing games are generally as good or better than their PC counterparts. Console shooting games don't totally suck; but the experience is notably worse. Console RTS games, if they exist at all, suck.

they each have different sets of games. sure theres some overlap, but they aren't really total replacements for each other.

There's less hassle for the 360 (don't have to install anything) but the PC can be easier to use (join games... control (if you're used to mouse/keyboard.. but with certain games, you can play easier with joysticks.. like halo is much easier on xbox than PC.. probably because it wasn't originally there))

Plus, you're asking this on a mostly-PC oriented computer, so you're not gonna get most of the pluses for the 360 here.. you could make this same post over at like teamxbox.com forums and you'd get a completely different response

I disagree with you about Oblivion, I saw both and the 360 one looks nice, but upclose it less detailed, as an owner of both a high end computer and a 360 on a hi def. tv, I still prefer my pc and I barly touched my 360 actually.

then again, to get better detail in oblivion on a pc you are going to spend a huge chunk o change.

from anands article
While we've been used to running high end SLI setups at 3MP resolutions and still getting reasonable frame rates in games, the same is not true for Oblivion. In fact, there isn't a single GPU or pair of GPUs today that will run Oblivion at 1600 x 1200 with everything turned on smoothly. Our highest end X1900 XT CrossFire setup can't even run our most stressful real world Oblivion test at 1280 x 1024 with all of the detail settings set to their highest values. That's right, $1200 worth of GPUs will get you less than 50 fps at less than the highest image quality, and we're not talking about having AA enabled either.

Right now the 360 might win.

But keep in mind it will be on the market for 5+ years, and by then, PCs will be WAY more powerful.
