Xbox360: Using old HD on new system

A friend of mine wants to purchase my used 360 for $280, and I would get a new premium with HDMI off Amazon for $350. Having HDMI is nice, but I can live without it. However, I heard that the system/dvd drive is quieter than my 360 I purchased last November. Which is how i'm trying to justify paying an extra $60 for a new 360... heh.

My main question is, can I use my old HD on my new system without any issues? I'm worried about my game saves, and XBLA games I purchased.

You should be fine. I took off my hard drive when my box died and was sent in to microsoft. They 360 that was sent back worked just fine with my harddrive.

The only thing that might be funky would be display settings for the hdmi stuff. Most of that should be taken care of by the system firmware though.

I don't remember if the XBLA games are tethered to the HDD or the Console, but either way you can always play then if you're signed into XBL.

XBLA games are tethered to both your Live gamertag and the console ID. IE, anyone on that console can play any of the XBLA games. If you buy a new console and recover your gamertag, you can play any of those XBLA games. However, someone using another gamertag can't play those games on that new console. (If I remember right) I'll try to dig up that information.

If you want to play your XBLA games offline, you can call MS, and they'll credit you for the games you bought, so that you can rebuy them on the new console.

I'm fairly certain they only do that for refurbs, but I could definitely be wrong.

Not sure on arcade games, but I've switched hard drives between machines without any issues.

wonderful... i was in the middle of playing Forza when my screen turned black and froze. I turn it off, and then back on again... 3 red rings... (insert many expletives here). I got this back in Nov 06. Ughhhh, i'm upset now. :( Back to gaming on my PC and PSP for the time being...

edit: do I send back the console/hard drive only? What about cables/controllers/etc?

You will send in the console only, no cables, controllers, hard drive or anything else.
