Xbox360/PS3 - too little ram again imo, they should've slapped addional 1GB system ram.

PS3 and Xbox360 both have 512mb of ram.
Why such a mystake again? Call me names but nobody can convince me that 512mb is enough for Battlefield2 type of games.

No amount of coding can go around the fact that 512mb is enough for a huge faced paced multiplayer game like Battlefield2.

Both systems have awesome specs, why didn't they slap 1Gb additional memmory to serve as texture or something. It's only $50 extra.

Imagine
Xbox360
3 cores, 512mb fast mem shared, 1gb ram!

PS3
1core+7additional+256graphic ram + 256fast system ram + 1GB main ram

Oh well...

Crap on my thread now

for the quantities an xbox 360 or ps3 are selling/going to sell, it would be more like $20-$25 extra I'm sure, but still... they already lose a lot on each console sold.

Xbox 360 and PS3 are totally designated to gaming...the utilization of 512mb of ram is quite adequate for what they are built to do. GAME. Just look at the original xbox ..64mb and it runs like a beast...try to build a system and play games like xbox quality lol..at 733mhz and 64mb of ram!? You've got to be kidding me. But like I said the ps3 and xbox 360 doesn't have to worry about everything a desktop has to.. IMO 512mb seems generous to me for a CONSOLE ..my 2 pennies.

And because of that, you'll be paying around a hundred bucks extra so they can make a good profit.

Uhh. They don't make profits off of the consoles, they take a loss.

But as others have stated, the extra RAM isn't really needed in consoles. They don't have the "Windows overhead" that PCs have in which the system is designed to do any number of things at the same time, therefore extra RAM is needed. A console is designed to do one thing, and only one thing. It just has less demanding needs.

Less memory, they'll make less of a loss. Generally, it would be profit, but in the simple category, with that amount of profit, you'd be losing, only this time, a bit less. Sony doesn't want to lose $1000 per console, but with added RAM, they'd be losing around $1200, but if the price went up due to the RAM, it would even out.

The price wouldn't go up do to the ram - it's not like PCs where buying more ram is an upgrade - a ps3 is a ps3; sony sets a standard that they think will serve well for the 3-5 year lifecycle, and that's that; people aren't buying a'better' ps3, they're just buying a ps3, and the price is chosen to get maximum market penetration while minimizing losses on console sales.

Adding extra memory is therefore a dead loss for sony (or MS for the XBOX), so if they think it isn't needed, they would be stupid to add it.
