or something akin to a keyboard and mouse?

the 360 seems to have a handy amount of FPS games with more to come, PS3 will be in the same boat, but being a long time PC gamer playin fps with the controllers like the 360/PS2/PS3 have i find it very hard (read getting pwned to ****** playing MOH Deathmatch on PS2 the otherday)

seriously though, if MS or Sony release something that is like keyboard and mouse in terms of use, id drop PC gaming like it was hot, because its becoming increasing more expensive to play new games at top settings.

with a board an mouse set up FPS and RTS would be good on a console and im sure they'd get some more customers (ie me :))

Keyboards do work on the 360, but only for typing character (at least as far as I have tested).

The PS2 supports keyboard and mouse to some extent (at least I played Red Faction 2 with it, I don't know how broad the support was), so I would think the PS3 would be in the same boat.

I really don't see why there seems to be so much hostility regarding mice and keyboards on consoles. Games are games and who care what input device is used?

I think it's more of a case of location.

People tend not to have a table in their living room, where most consoles are located. Without a table, the mouse-keyboard setup is kinda useless.

And of course, it doesn't make good business sense to design a game for an optional controller. So you either have to ship the controller with your game (ala Guitar Hero), or just stick with the standard.

:( im never gonna get used to shooting with those pads. played MOH again today and i have no coordination ! coz i use a similar pad to the ps2 to fly in BF2 i find myself using both analogue sticks in tandem (i have one for throttle/rudder, the other for pitch/roll in BF2) whenever i try to run anywhere, which means i usually end up looking at the sky while running, shooting on the run is impossible, sniper rifle is impossible becuase the sticks on the pad i was using were like digital! on or off, no in between.

ill get a PS3 anyway, for GT5, i can handle driving wouldnt play a driving sim on anything else... well maybe a steering wheel n pedals, if had the room for them.

The support is there, but the programs have to support them.

Doesn't much matter if your 360 can recognize you hitting WASD, if the program doesn't pay attention.

It seems to me that most of the hardcore console gamers are happy playing shooters with a gamepad. The companies wont go out of their way to add features if they dont think it will increase sales.

As for the RTS issue, what RTS?
The only game I've seen converted to console was Command and Conquer, and it was implemented so poorly that it bombed.

I've read Microsoft says they won't ever do it because it's a console not a PC.

Okay the problem with PS2 and FPS was the damn dual shock controller and it was terrible :! no trigger , analog stick accuracy was so terrible and overall the controller just sucked for FPS. On the other hand , xbox 360 controller was made in mind for FPS because they did include trigger , a accurate Joystick and Playing games FPS on xbox 360 is playable and your not going to be cursing the developer or the game. I don?t think they really need to include an Keyboard and mouse for xbox 360. I can play Perfect dark zero , Oblivion , Battlefield 2 Modern Combat and other FPS easily on the xbox 360 controller. If I was given the same game like Modern Combat on ps2 and xbox 360. I would play it on XBOX 360 not because of the Graphic but the controller.
