My sister just picked up a 360 and a copy of Oblivion, which is great because she has been wanting to play it for a long time, but couldn't justify the cost PC that would need to be built to do so.

Anyway, we were playing Oblivion and I couldn't help but notice that there were times when the game would literally freeze for a few moments. I know this is common for the PC version (if you have settings too high for the hardware, etc.) but what about for the 360? The game/console are brand new.

I've put about 75 hours into the 360 version of oblivion, and I dont remember it completely freezing for a few seconds a single time. Youre talking about during actual gameplay, and not during loads (as in the bar stops moving)?

Not completely freezing, but definitely moments of studders and jitters to the point of being a problem. I remember it around the beginning riding up to Kvatch.

On my 8800GT, which is about twice as fast as the 360 graphics processor, I get between 20 to 40 fps with frequent stuttering at 1280x1024. The game engine is not very optimized. Todays games with better graphics run much better on my card yet Oblivion still brings it to its knees even though it doesnt look as good.

Are you using the high res texture mods and the extended view / LOD mods?

On the 360 the game has to load new areas frequently when outdoors. On a horse, just run in a straight line and notice the pauses as the game tries to catch up. It gets even more noticeable when you unlock the horse from the Assassins Guild questline (it's fast!).

Studders and jitters are mostly normal, but I never saw them as a problem affecting gameplay. Does your 360 have a hard drive? Oblivion relies fairly heavily on one, if it has to go to the CD to fetch a texture, I can imagine it being brutal.

I have this game for the 360 and I can't play it anymore. The loading times for me were just unbearable. Every chest and every barrel I would open up would take at least a minute to open, and there would only be a spoon or a broom in it.

Yeah... no. If that's the case, you had some kind of defective hardware.

wonder if the slowdowns would improve when we get the option to install to hard drive in the fall. I don't have oblivion on the 360 I have it on the ps3. It was only 10 bucks, so what the heck. Needed a ps3 title. I haven't played it though I barely created my character and got released from jail.

It's possible, but I haven't noticed any other problems in any other games. Every other game works perfect.
