I have some ideas to counteract this after some research.
  1. 1) Port forwarding the 3 ports on my XBOX360 IP address.
    2) Enable uPnP on the router (if it hasn't been already).
    3)Setup DMZ on the XBOX360.

Hoping one of these show my NAT settings as 'Open' when I try later tonight. However question is, should I be trying one of these first, or all of them at once? Is it safe to do this security wise? Also what if it doesn't work, are there any other suggestions I can try?

Thanks,
Neil.

Sorry for information purposes, it is a Draytek Vigor 2600i router I'm connecting with.

I originally did the port forwarding of the 3 ports, but I now have my 360 on a DMZ. I never really had any NAT problems, this was more of a prevention than anything.

in case you want to set up port forwarding: http://portforward.com/

But to make it simple, just assign a static IP to the Xbox 360, then DMZ that IP address.
- no need to bother with port forwarding or UPNP

Sorry to sound simple, but how to I assign my XBOX to a static IP? I'm not on a LAN, just a router making the connections.

You've got to do it in your console's network settings. Instead of automatic, change it to manual. Of course, you'll need to know what your gateway's local IP is (Could be a number of different IP addresses, but probably 192.168.1.1) what IP your 360 should be (this will be based off of the first three numbers of your gateway's IP so using my example, your Xbox's IP would be something like 192.168.1.123, , and what your DNS server IPs are. Typically your subnet is 255.255.255.0).

To find out this information, go to any computer on your network and (I'm guessing that you are using Windows) go to Start -> Run and type 'cmd' (no quotes), and hit return. This will bring up a terminal style window where you can type in 'ipconfig /all' (no quotes) and it will give you all the info you need to get started.

Excellent, I will do that when arriving home. The port forwording changed the NAT settings to Open, but I will do the previous guide for extra assurance.

What kind of advice is that? There is no way I'm buying a new router for a gaming console, when the one I have now is perfectly fine.

I've never even heard of draytek before this thread. Next time buy a reputable name brand so you wont have such issues with compatibility. Makes perfect sense to me.

They are fairly reputable, even more so than Netgear infact.

This isn't the thread for who's right and wrong, I'm just looking a problem sorted out. Buying a new router seems very excessive.

Well, I'm just saying I'd had similar issues with a router. After trying opening ports, port forwarding, udp setting all that crap. I said fuck it. returned the router and got another one. Plugged it in and everything just worked.
