XBOX360 Game Prices 59.99

Wow, I don't like this. This is definately not a good move from MS. Talk about trying to kill your sales.

I thought games were expensive enough at $50.

There is no proof that piracy actually costs the gaming industry money. Hell, it's one of the fastest growing industries in the world.

How can it not cost the game industry money? That is absurd.

I remember when i paid that for NES and SNES games and i thought it was too much then and still do. While im very familiar with this price, i dont like it. I expect the price to be the same with the PS3 as well.

This is one reason I havn't gone over to the console market. All games, including PC, are expensive when they are released. However, PC games drop in price faster. Take this $60 release price, after an entire year it may drop to what $45? and only if it isn't a top seller. Pretty much any PC game after a year is down to $25 or even less.

I'm sure some piracy does cost the industry money, but not nearly as much as they would have you believe. It's definitely not to the point where they need to raise prices.

That and they stick advertisements in there now also, seems like that would... help

i still remember how bad/good I felt when getting street fighter 2 and mortal kombat 2 the day they came out.

I can't remember how much mortal kombat 2 cost, but I remember sf2 ringed up for 79.99 at toys r us. Thank you daddy hah!

On the flipside, I still play it to this day, well over a decade later, so it was a pretty good investment.

That is speculative pricing to protect the store itself. If they put them up at $50 now and people preorder it, they will have to give them at $50 when the game's released, even if it costs the store more.

Besides, nobody's forcing you to buy the game.

[sarcasm]It's impossible that the high price of games added to the crappy quality of some games hurts some game sales [/sarcasm]

No one knows for sure what impact piracy has.

What I don't agree with is the price fixing in the console market. How is it that 99% of the games cost the same amount to produce? What? They don't? Then why the hell are the all priced the same. Just because it's a PS2/XBOX/GC game doesn't automatically make it worth $49.99 or $39.99. They need to start allowing the companies to price the games at whatever they feel it's worth instead of allowing an artificial price to be set.

What really amazes me is that when there's a PC title also on the consoles, the consoles will cost more. For example, a Madden football game: PC $24.99 PS2: $49.99. So it costs twice as much to develop for the consoles?? I mean seriously.

Another thing I've been really thinking about is that maybe they're putting too much production into some games. Let's say the have a game that has 5 hour playtime but the game play, graphics, story, and control is awesome. Wouldn't you rather have a really great short game for $25, then a $59.99 crappy, buggy game with 25 hours of playtime.

Because just because somebody copies the game, doesn't necessarily mean if that person couldn't copy the game, that he would have went out and bought it.

I'm sure there is an effect, but i'm also sure it's extremely small. Certainly not what they would have you believe.

Not sure what you're basing the first paragraph on... as for the second, of course no one is forcing anyone to buy the games, but obviously this could help people decide which system they're going to buy

it might not cost double to develop...but that might be where they recoup their losses...I mean honestly, who plays football games on their pc...I'd have to imagine that market is much smaller than their console market.

There does seem to be price fixing though...that's for sure, which is why I was somewhat surprised/happy to see the ESPN sports games on x-box be cheaper at release and be just as good as the alternatives.

What's inflation like at the moment?
In terms of prices 5 or 10 years ago, how do prices now compare?
(Just suggesting that $50 -> $60 isn't really a $50 -> $60 increase when you think about possible inflation)

Ya know, they've been speculating that the next-gen games from MS and Sony were going to cost >$50 for months now guys. Don't act surprised. Even then, there's no guarantee right now that this will be the set price going forward.

Gaming is a multi billion $$ a year industry, I remember reading that it rakes in more than movies do per year.
