Do you ABSOLUTELY need it, or can you just rip the old HDD (a 20gb model) out of the plastic casing and use a standard ide/sata (whichever it is) to USB cable to transfer data to the new HDD?

Backordered.

$10 more on Amazon, but I've already got the ide/sata->USB adaptor.

Its worth a shot. The 20GB hard drive isn't worth anything anyways, might as well crack er open and see if it works.

You can just transfer your files over via USB stick now. Just did it for myself earlier this week. Was easy

Can you transfer everything though? At least when I tried to do some transfers, I was unable to transfer saves for games like Rock Band (to my USB drive). Apparently, there's a small subset of games that won't let you just transfer your save.

My Rock Band saves went fine. You basically just format the flash drive so that it behaves like the real memory cards that they used to sell for the old 360s so there shouldn't be any reason it wouldn't transfer. If you downloaded some song packs, you would have to transfer the content license via the Internet. Maybe that was your issue?

Gamestop has them used from time to time. Can save you some money. IN an unrelated note Gamestop has a 7 day return policy on used items.

I formatted mine, but using the standard move feature in the 360's System menu, it would tell me that I couldn't transfer it. Maybe I'll have to try it again... it was awhile ago.

Can I use a USB hard drive for this? I have 19gigs I need to move off my 20 gig hard drive. I don't have a 20+ gig Flash drive.

When my old Xbox died I just took the old 20 gig hard drive and used it on my new Xbox. I went to my PC and transferred the licenses over. The transfer of licenses is a pain the ass because you have to do it from your PC and you can only do a certain amount of licenses at a time. At the time I did not realized that you can only do certain amount of them and could not figure out why it was not working. I had over 300 rockband songs and each one needed to have the license copied, which took awhile.

I recently picked up a slim and had a similar issue. I just did the copying of my ~30GB of data in two runs with my 16GB USB drive. You can select the items you want to move to get as close to your USB drive's limit as possible, with the items actually being moved so they won't be on your original machine for the second run (i.e., eliminating confusion about what files you already moved). I don't know about how this works for protected saves, though.

I actually own a transfer kit from when I upgraded from a 20GB to a 60GB but that particular kit no longer works with the Slim 250GB.

Here's a related question - can I transfer SOME licenses to a new Xbox360 with a new Gamertag, but continue to use the UNTRANSFERED ones on the old 360?

I think you can because when I was at my sister house I stuck my hard drive on her Xbox to play rock band. It was easier to do that then trying to fish out all the cables. Then I saw some new songs and down loaded them when I was on her Xbox. The problem with this is that when I went home and tried to play the new songs off line they would not work. It would only work on line. When I went to the web I saw 3 different licenses my old Xbox my new Xbox and my sisters Xbox that is when I transferred all the licenses to my new Xbox.

In your case you should be fine. The old Xbox should play everything it ever downloaded and anything you transfer to the new Xbox should be fine as along as you go to the web move the licenses. Make sure you pick the right ones because if you move a licenses and that software is still on the old Xbox then it might not work offline. Everything will work online no matter what from what I have seen as long as you log into your gamer tag.
