Likely a dumb question...

Can I use my normal Xbox360 wireless controller on my WinXP box, or do I have to purchase a separate "for Windows" controller? Maybe there's a separate USB receiver I can buy for WinXP and use the same controller for either the console or my PC?

No you don't need a "for Windows" controller, you just need the little USB receiver. The receiver comes with the "for Windows" version of the controller, or you can buy it separately for ~$15 and use it with any Xbox 360 controller. The "for Windows" controller can also be used with an Xbox 360 of course. The controllers are all the same.

Not a dumb question at all, actually. I consider it the best gamepad for the PC too so enjoy. :)

Yep, you can even use your 360 wireless ear piece (if you have one) on your PC with that receiver, even the driving controllers. Cheapest thing MS has made for the 360/PC. :)

Yeah one of the great things about the Games For Windows branding is that games are required to have out-of-the-box 360 controller support, the only thing I hate about the 360 controller is the D-Pad, it's just horrible, playing 2D games is downright impossible, it's very hard to press left without pressing down (or up) if you relax your thumb a little bit, Microsoft really needs to give their D-Pad a redesign, especially if they have ANY plans of releasing a handheld gaming device.

So - before I go out and buy a receiver, I tried the play and charge cable just now and while it detects a controller driver correctly, I'm not seeing it in my Game Controllers control panel.

Do I have to get the wireless receiver? No biggie, just curious if there's a way to get it to work with the play/charge cable.

Yes, you still have to get a receiver.

All the Play and Charge cable does is charge the controller. It doesn't handle any of the game functions. The controller is still operates as if it were wireless.
