My daughter came to visit me for Christmas and she had gotten a new Xbox360 bundle for Black Friday. She had been saving her game-saves on the "cloud" using her Xbox Live account.

I have an Xbox360 from August 2009 which does not have a hard drive. I was told by a guy at BestBuy that I could use a standard USB stick drive to save games on this Xbox360 rather than the Xbox flash memory cards if I hooked up to the internet and updated the operating system.

So this Christmas we hooked up the 2009 Xbox to the internet with an ethernet cable and after plugging in and configuring a 360 gigabyte USB external drive, it allowed us to run the OS update. So now we can save game-saves to stick drives rather than those Xbox memory cards.

My daughter wanted to pull down a game-save from the cloud after she logged into her Xbox live account, but it said there wasn't enough memory to use the cloud. What I don't get is we had configured a 19 gb memory slot on the external drive, so that seems like plenty of memory. Is it that the cloud will not let you use flash memory, even if you have a decent amount, or is it the Ram memory in the Xbox? What gives?

I have an Xbox360 from August 2009 which was stripped of the hard drive - it was purchased for my wifes son who is still in the UK - he took the HD back with him. Anyway, I was told by a guy at BestBuy that I could use a standard USB stick drive to save games on this Xbox360 rather than the Xbox flash memory cards if I hooked up to the internet and updated the operating system.

I actually just bought another 20 GB hard drive off this fs/t forum on here because of this. I had given away my 20 GB hard drive off my old xbox in plans to use a 4GB thumb drive instead.

Cloud saves/cloud profiles requires "internal" storage, whether it's a hard drive or one of the newer arcades with 4 GB internal flash.

It's pretty annoying. It just syncs all the could stuff on your actual console I'm guessing to be used if you lose a network connection.

If it requires internal memory, the Hard Drive is considered internal but flash drive not? That is so bogus. They should enable the Xbox360 to use a flash drive if it is big enough.

You only need 514 MB of local storage to use the cloud, even with a USB drive. I've done this on my system with an 8 GB flash drive, and it works fine. Have you enabled cloud storage on your USB only system?

Does your system have a hard drive or is one of the arcade systems that come with 4GB of space?

It specifically said for me that it requires "internal" storage. I was trying to use a 4 GB thumb drive.

This post confirms it to be true: http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/f/13/p/159703/877639.aspx

and here: http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/f/13/t/156009.aspx

What do I need to use the cloud?
In order to utilize the cloud storage function, you will need to have both a Gold subscription to LIVE and at least 514 MB of free space on an HDD or internal memory unit.

:hmm: It's an S with no HDD, so I guess it has internal 4 GB. I thought it was putting the "local cloud cache" on the thumb drive, but maybe not?

It was a the next system up from the Arcade in 2009, but the hard drive was removed and taken to use with another Xbox360 in a different location. So it has whatever internal memory is std with that unit, and a USB flash drive.

When I configured it, I tried to configure the flash drive to the largest size it would take, and I think it was 19gb, even tho the USB external drive was like 360 gb.

I picked up a 4GB Kinect Bundle during all the promotions going on at GameStop, and they had a hell of a deal when they sold used 120GB hard drives for $20. Best $20 spent on my new xbox so far. If you have some games to trade in, you'll get an extra 50% which can be used towards getting a used hard drive.

Bam! They have another sale going on. 120gb for $25 and 60gb for $20. Plus other stuff too.
