Xbox360 1080p question

I looked at the specs for the vga cable, which i heard is necessary for the 1080p output, but the specs only show

Standard and High-definition gaming output in the following VGA formats:
640 x 480, 848x480, 1024 x 768, 1280 x 720, 1280 x 768, 1280 x 1024, and 1360 x 768

I'm confused! Help! haha

I thought 1080p output was only over component.

you cant get 1080p via components. only via VGA as of now

Update: Added list of supported resolutions after the break.
To break it all down what you will get from the Xbox 360 after this fall's software update:

VGA:

* HD DVD - 1080p resolution and all others
* DVD - Upscaled as high as 1080p resolution and all others
* Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p, also supports native-1080p games in the future

Component:

* HD DVD - 1080i resolution maximum, limited by AACS
* DVD - Upscaled to 480p maximum, limited by CSS
* Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p, also supports native-1080p games in the future

because 1080P was patched in. The packaging or specs haven't been updated to show the new supported resolutions.

The only way to get 1080p from the xbox360 is to use the VGA cables. It works, I use it with my 24".

The problem is the cable might have been made before they added the 1080p update to the 360.

I personally think the 1080p over component looks amazing. However you cant upscale DVD's over component, so only the dashboard/games show up in 1080p. Still Viva Pinata and Gears of War in 1080p are pretty sweet.

Also - the HD-DVD add-on won't do 1080p over component - only via VGA.

The XBOX 360's 1080p over component definitely works *IF* your TV set supports it. Many, many, many 1080p sets do not support 1080p over component (HDMI or VGA only for 1080p). This is where much of the confusion lies, but the rest comes from the HD-DVD specs preventing 1080p output over component for protected content while allowing it over VGA. This shouldn't matter for the bulk of films, which have been telecined from 24FPS to 60 interlaced fields per second (3:2 pulldown), because your set's integrated scaler chip should detect this and deinterlace to full 1080p via inverse telecine (reverse 3:2 pulldown). Unfortunately, most current sets are flawed and do not do this properly or at all.
