just moved my xbox into my room and hooked it up yo my Dell2000Fp, but can't get any sound. can i hook it up to headphones? it wont connect to my yamaha speakers.

Radioshack (if you're not on EST, you can still probably find one open) will carry the adapter you need, you'd need a female RCA to 1/8" audio jack. Hook the video up normally and hook the adapter to the white wire for the audio.

Edit: The same adapter should work for the speakers too

How does it look on the 2000FP? I have one (well, 2) of those monitors, and have thought about hooking it up to the Xbox but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Yep, I use the same thing on a PS2. You'll probably need a 1/8" coupler too. Oh, don't forget to get an inline volume control since I doubt the XBox output has one.

Is the analog audio output on the Xbox amplified?

Not that I'm aware of Howard.
Sound quality might be a tad off, then, depending on the levels he listens at and the sensitivity of said headphones.

I MUST use headphones at night, otherwise I risk dismemberment at the hands of MTG.
Here's my setup:

Xbox AV Pack: Advanced AV Pack
Video: Planar 18" LCD (using s-video)
Audio: via TOSlink cable to Creative Labs Soundblaster Live Platinum Live Drive
Speakers: Creative Labs Inspire 5.1 5300
Headphones: Sony earbuds (for quiet gaming at night)
Live Headset: Sanyo cordless phone headset

I just put the headset over one of the earbuds.
Too many cables, but works like a champ!
