The last console I ever had was the Super NES.

I'm mainly a computer game player, but I saw the PS2 for 129.99 at Best Buy the other day.

How much does the regular Xbox go for nowadays?

Considering that I haven't played any of the older console games, would it be worth it to buy one of these consoles? Which one?

Regular Xbox is < $100 used. You can't buy it new. Get the PS2. It had the most good games. Games are STILL coming out on the PS2.

Main benefit of the Xbox is it's media center capabilities.

I'd definitely go PS2. It has guitar hero for it man! And I'm pretty sure they're making a rock band for it soon as well... I see it at gamestop.com as marked for January sometime. God of War 1/2, Jack and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, it goes on and on. The xbox doesn't have much in exclusives outside of Halo (meh) and ninja gaiden black.

PS2 without a doubt, probably has the best and largest game library of any other console. Tons of great games at dirt cheap prices too. The Xbox you can only buy used now but MS dropped it like a bad habbit the moment the 360 came into play and some of the good games for it are a bit harder to find.

Also with the PS2 you can play PS1 games, a lot of gems in there as well if old school 3D graphics don't bother you

Eh, lookin at the specs on your PC, I'd say it isn't worth the trouble. Doubt any game on either console is going to impress you, especially after puttin down $130 on the machine and $30 or so on each game. But maybe if you picked up everything used, depending on the kinds of games you like, you might get your moneys worth. What type of games are you into?

I think you're in the wrong forum:

I'll mainly play the games that only came out on console or that play better on the console... Metal Gear Solid, sports games, racing sims/games, Resident Evil.

30 bones for each game? Is that new or used?

I walked by a Gamestop today and say a bin that said used PS2 games for $15 or under. I briefly looked, but I don't know what was good or bad. The games looked decent.

BTW, does the PS2 have support for HDTV sets?

Or what if I plug it into my 22" Widescreen monitor (1680 x 1050)?

PS2 definitely. Waaay better games than the original XBox (plus compatibility with PSX games, which it seems you missed). There are still NEW games coming out, which will still run you about $40-$50, but there's a huge library of great games for $19.99 or less.

As far as connections go, you can get component output, but not HDMI/DVI.

I loved my Xbox all through college, so I'm tempted to be one of the few that advises you in that direction. However, most of the best, once-exclusive Xbox 1 games have since been made available on the PC or other platforms (Knights of the Old Republic, Ninja Gaiden Black, Jade Empire, Halo, etc.).

Since you asked a question about HD capabilities, the Xbox came out later so it was the more powerful machine. Many cross-platform games looked a bit better on it than the PS2, however this was often negated more than it should have been because many games were developed with the PS2 in mind and then given only a slight boost for the Xbox release. Towards the end of the Xbox lifecycle that often meant a bump up to 720p support.

I used component, not sure if there is a DVI adaptor, but the ps2 was and I think still is my most played console ever for me. I have the most games for it, and was on most. You can get racing, rpgs, action, whatever you want. If you want games, the ps2 is where its at. the 360 is close behind for me.

PS2 and you won't be dissapointed

No. Unless you run it through a converter, that is. The best you'll do is component video. Don't expect 720p, max is 480p on a PS2. If you want high res, buy a PS3/360 :p

I never liked the PS2. Don't care for its exclusives outside of a few like God of War and Resident Evil 4. Most of the huge library is crap.

Xbox had games more like what I liked on the PC. So with a good PC, there's not a whole lot of need. Still though:

Halo, Ninja Gaiden, Forza, Deathrow (awesome game!!), Jade Empire, Fable, KOTOR 1/2, Deus Ex:IW, Mercenaries, Hitman games, Prince of Persia games, Splinter cell games. I like pretty much all the sports, racing, and FPS games way better on the Xbox if for nothing else than the controller.

Then if you add a modchip for emulator support and excellent media playback, it's a pretty awesome system.

I used my PS2 for games, my Xbox for media center stuff. IMO, anything worthwhile on the Xbox was either on the PS2 and/or computer. Shadow of the Colossus is reason enough to get a PS2!
