Apple might make a play with the apple TV, but that's solely going to take a bite out of nintendo's pie. Its too much of a stretch to imagine them making inroads into core games.
MS def isnt going to turn their back on the core, but the defining characteristic of this generation IMO is parity between the two leading platforms and an explosion in third party games. If we lose that parity, and it looks like we will, what happens? Third parties could pick sides, or basically choose a winner. They turned their back on the wii pretty quickly.
The WiiU is DOA as far as I'm concerned (but that's a whole other topic). But if Sony takes their time and does it right, at the right price, they can do to the nextbox what they did to the dreamcast.
This next gen is going to be very strange. I don't think they're going to march in lockstep like they did in this last one. All I hope is that MS sets a high bar, because you know Sony is going to jump it, however high.
