I really really really wanna play some NHL 09, but the RROD seems to want to interfer with that. I've tried the towel trick a few times but it never works...wtf? Is there something I'm not doing. I wrap it in 3 towels and run it till it gets 2 red light (also shuts down?). Then unplug it for a while till its cool then try to run it and it doesn't work. I think that it is screwed but I don't want to wait a month to get my 5th xbox (yes 5 now!).

Any Ideas? Am I doing this wrong?

I really don't want to not have a xbox for another month (best time so far was 3 1/2 weeks)

I did the towel trick with my friend's tree-siddee and it worked for one day but then the next day it wouldn't work any more and he just had to send it off. You're probably ganna have to bite the bullet.

X-clamp mod. All you need is some plastic and metal washers (the correct size, mind you), a little TIM, the correct Torx tools, and isopropyl alcohol. It's very easy, I would know. I make a business out of it. :p

You do have to overheat it, but it has to be done a particular way and length of time. Here, this link will help you out. It's basically what I do: http://copronymous.com/wp-cont.../fix-for-the-3rlod.pdf

Sounds like you need to buy a second Xbox for the times when yours is being repaired/replaced. ;)

Good decision - in your case I wouldn't do the xclamp mod. The RROD means that basically anything can be wrong with the xbox that could cause it to not start, and while it's usually do to the motherboard flexing from the xclamps, it isn't always, and since the towel trick isn't working with yours that makes me doubt it's the problem.

5th 360? You either have incredibly bad luck with the quality of the replacement consoles or you're doing something wrong in terms of console placement. What's your setup like? And dare I ask how long do you play at a time?

The one ring RROD means that it is a problem that can be fixed only by MS. The infamous 3 ring RROD (which I assumed he had) can be fixed by anyone, most of the time. But it can't be guaranteed it won't come back. (All the ones I've fixed have been fine up til now though)

bad placement was only my first one....the last 3 I have kept on my desk near a window. I have just come to the conclusion that Microsoft hates me, and is doing all that they can to ruin my day

fixed my one and only 360 with the x-clamp mod and the penny trick together. I figured since I have her open might as well do both. It finally RROD last year after 3-4 years of good service, been going strong since the MOD.

X-Clamp MOD is easy to do specially if you are used to building your own computer.

Towel trick is only a temporary fix as it does not fix the presumed problem, bending of the motherboard because of the faulty X-clamp design which causes the solder points to loose contact. The X-clamp mod and the penny trick both releases the pressure and tries to keep the motherboard from bending.

You still need to overheat the board after these mods (towel trick or powering up with the fan disconnected) to re-seat the pins and solder points.

good luck

This is a very temporary fix from what I understand. If you're still in warranty it's much better to just get it fixed properly.
