XBOX: replacement DVD drive has to be OEM?

Is there anything that a person can buy that would fit in place of a stock XBOX drive and be detected appropriately and work? Thing doesn't even have to fit if I leave the cover open :D

No, they are not standard DVD drives.... Perhaps check ebay for a broken unit?

Forget ebay, look at our own For Sale/Trade forum :D

Well, since 'broken xbox' returns zero search hits in the FS/T forums and dozens on eBay. I suggest eBay might be a more usefull referal in this case.

The split yellow cord that runs in the back adjacent to the IDE cable is specific to the xbox and the xbox will not run without that piece of hardware.

just get a 4 pin spliter (1 into 2) and get drives that read xbox file system and ur set ;)
