I'm buying one right away ... If there is a modchip, usually its first developed for the original motherboard, and then if the motherboard changes it takes a little while to them to find the new solder points for a new motherboard. Also, if there are any tricks like the PS2 Demo Disc swap trick with the original JAP PS2 they will exist on first generation consoles but not second generation ones. Plus ... I'd rather get the system now and buy some games to enjoy, and if they happen to come up with a method to copy games, then so be it! I still buy games for my PS2 even though its modded (Only the ones I actually like though). My guess is that Microsoft is banking on the fact that there are no dual-layered DVD burners yet, and that their lack of availability will prevent piracy at least in the short term. Who knows though, maybe they dont even have a copy protection scheme at all! ... Before XP and product activation there was really no true copy protection scheme on any of Microsoft's products!
GameCube will be very difficult to pirate because of the proprietary format it uses. The only possible method I forsee is using the Panasonic GameCube which will play DVDs and getting it to read DVD-ROM discs to play games. In any case, it will definitely be an interesting next year for consoles with 3 major players in the video game scene.
