Xbox Originals Announced, Coming December 4th.

Xbox Originals, possible Divx support, Europe getting XBL Video Marketplace......this is shaping up to be the best Fall/Spring Update yet.

I'd buy psychonauts. I was actually trying to find a copy of that the other day with no luck. I bought crimson skies for 2.99 at gamestop and fable for 9.99 so I already got those.

As for games, I'll be getting Crimson Skies and Psychonauts ... I tried Psychonauts on PC and it was just frustrating with controls, but it was hilarious.

So far we know that Warner Bros is going to start an on-demand movie service. This is similar to Xbox Live Video Marketplace and it allows MS to get around the problems they've had with licensing in Europe.

Divx is also rumored.

I'm still hoping for a web browser, but meh ... I don't use the video marketplace - having the ability to stream from Nero (though DivX playback would be pwn) is enough for me.

Xbox Originals: Known Issues

Xbox Originals ? Known Issues

There are some known issues with Xbox Originals. With all game titles, publisher logos at the start of a game can be choppy on first play when caching. Also, any additional content within a game (such as a demo or trailer) is not supported by Xbox Originals titles and selecting those options may result in crashing the game (requiring a restart of the console).

There are also some issues unique to specific game titles, as follows:

Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge: There is some minor flickering at the top of the screen that happens very rarely. The ?Press A to Continue? message is missing when the host player leaves a multiplayer game. Additional content within the game (such as demos & trailers) are not supported and selecting those options may result in crashing the game (requiring a restart of the console)

Fable: There are some random bursts of audio static and some minor texture issues and a short hang up when removing tattoos. Additional content within the game (such as demos & trailers) are not supported and selecting those options may result in crashing the game (requiring a restart of the console)

Fuzion Frenzy: There are some minor frame rate issues. Additional content within the game (such as demos & trailers) are not supported and selecting those options may result in crashing the game (requiring a restart of the console)

Halo: There are some very mild frame rate drops.

Psychonauts: HDMI 720p is not supported for PAL users. Running the game in 720p over HDMI will result in the game locking up for PAL users. If you are using HDMI output, set the resolution to 1080i or 1080p (anything but 720p)

Sounds like they are pretty much just straight-porting the original game. I'm doubting we'll see any multi-player added to Halo.

Game Manuals are also added for each game at Xbox.com.

I used to be excited about digital distribution - downloading games straight to my console and whatnot. But after getting a replacement 360 from Microsoft after getting the RROD, and finding that my downloaded XBLA games were all but useless unless I was connected to the internet, I am far less inclined to buy anything through them anymore.

I'd rather have the original disc for these games (and any game for that matter) - because at least that is something tangible and has some value after the 360 gets replaced by the next generation of consoles.

I have gotten quite a few questions about yesterday?s Xbox Originals announcement. Specifically, folks want to know if these games will have additional functionality like Achievements and Gamer score. The answer is no. ?These are the original games that were created before Xbox 360. In order to preserve the integrity of the original gaming experience they provide, they will have the features available at the time of their initial release.? I hope that clears that up.

I know it's probably not what you wanted to hear, but I thought it would be best to get clear up an misunderstanding up right up front. I'll talk more about it on my show this week. That's unfortunate. They could have really made this into something unique--it seems like it would be the next logical step up from XBLA releases like Castlevania SotN. I would like to try a few of these games, but I'll definitely opt for cheap used copies. Who knows if I'll ever get around to doing so, though...

That's unfortunate. They could have really made this into something unique--it seems like it would be the next logical step up from XBLA releases like Castlevania SotN. Yeah, at this point it would be more of a convenience thing or because I can't find a game used anywhere. Panzer Dragoon Orta would be one of those. I've seen plenty of Crimson Skies but not PDO.

w00t! If they're going to be doing all the games at $15, then Sony will surely try to offer PS2 games for less once they're done with the PS1 🙂

Actually upon further reading of this - it appears that very, very little work is being done to get these games out.

It is all done through software emulation - which is already built into the 360. So essentially, they are just taking the original Xbox games, creating images of those games, and offering the image for download for $15. Assuming they have the bandwidth for it, I wouldn't be surprised if just about every backwards compatible Xbox game gets put on this, as it's essentially free money.

It's like legal piracy. Ha.

Do yourself a favor and just grab the original discs. They're value is worth far more than a $15 download.

As long as MS can get permission from the publisher. But like you said, who would pass up free money? There may be some cases where circumstances prevent it from happening. I'm not sure if some of Squaresoft's old games will make it to Nintendo's VC, because they're still milking them on other systems. I don't even think they're out of print yet on the Playstation - you can still buy Final Fantasy Chronicles, Final Fantasy Origins and Final Fantasy Anthology new on Amazon.com. So you might have some games like that where the publisher won't agree to it.

I agree on just buying the discs. Very few Xbox games go for more than $15 used.

Orta is tough to come by? I dont know if I traded in my copy, but I used to have one... I'll have to take a look. It's not listed in my Sochl collection though, so I may have gotten rid of it.

I've seen Orta once in the used games bin at my local Gamestops and EB Games.
