Xbox One passes PS4 on Amazon chart

Microsoft's next-gen console grabs the lead back after policy reversal announcement.
The Xbox One has overtaken the PlayStation 4 on Amazon's video game best-seller chart, one day after Microsoft announced a dramatic policy reversal.

The Xbox One was tracking ahead of the PS4 earlier this month, MCV points out, though it fell behind after Sony's E3 announcements of pricing ($400) and policies (plays used game, won't require Internet connection).

Notably, there is only one Xbox One SKU on the Amazon best-seller chart--the Day One Edition. Meanwhile, five separate PS4 bundles grace the preorder chart.

Microsoft yesterday announced new policies that put the Xbox One more on par with the PS4.

The new terms state players are free to trade in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc-based games in the same way that they can today on the Xbox 360. In addition, Microsoft has done away with 24-hour Internet "check-ins" and lifted the Xbox One region lock.

Though Microsoft has backtracked on some of its policies, the company has no plans to revisit the platform's $500 price point.

Microsoft made the right move on Thursday.

Already being discussed in the The Official Xbox One Thread .

Useless comparison - what if you were to add the sales from all of the 4 different PS4 SKUs?

I'd like to know the combined number of pre-orders across all 5 PS3 SKUs, vs. the single Xbox SKU. Those numbers would tell the real story.

I know it's an unfair comparison. I was pointing out the sales boost.

Analysts predict that in the end, XBox One sales and PS4 sales will be even.

All analysts also predict that the XBox One and PS4 wont sell as much as their predecessors because tablets and smartphones have already stole a lot of the market share from the console gaming market.

I don't think that will be the case. Tablets and smartphones might hurt other mobile consoles but seems like it would have a net positive affect on home consoles. They are already integrating phones / tablets into the systems, they're taking advantage of this.

I think the PS4 will sell faster in the beginning of the the lifecycle, but it will end up being relatively even at the end.

I wouldn't make a big fuss of pre-orders though. It is rather easy to pre-order when it cost you $0. I'd imagine a few people have pre-ordered multiple PS4 bundles to ensure at least one makes it to them at launch.

I expect similar things. Both will have awesome games, and without the idiotic DRM thanks to us squeaky wheels, we have a fairly even playing field. Screw the fanboys, both will rock!

that's the day one console.. both MS and sony where supposed to ship like 1 million day one consoles.. Sony sold all theirs in 1 day.. MS is still selling them.. regular consoles (none day ones) are not selling fast as they are available at any store.

big picture people.. not sales on a day by day.. example why below (and no those numbers are pulled from nowhere.. EXAMPLE not fact))

day 1:
Sony day one- 1 million #1
xbox day 1- 200,000#2
Day 2:
sony has no day one
Regualr Ps4 100,000 #2
xbox day one 200,000 #1

day 4
sony regular Ps4 100,000 #2
Xbox day one 125,000 #1

People buying the Xbox One before the DRM reversal were dummies. It was bad for consumers and wasn't going to make games any cheaper, contrary to what those idiots over at Kotaku were saying. However, it's quite obvious pre-order sales were not going as hoped. The only thing that surprises me is how long Microsoft stuck to their guns.

Now both systems are pretty much on even footing. Which is ultimately good for everyone. The battle won't be over hardware this time around, since both systems are so similar. Yes the PS4 is more powerful but I doubt third-party devs will take advantage of it. Games will likely end up being identical on both platforms. The ultimate winner is who will deliver the best exclusive titles or exclusive perks. Hopefully this will lead to tighter competition and better games. Especially if Microsoft begins tapping their first party devs to create something beyond just Halo and Gears.

While the 180 was good for consumers, I probably still won't get an Xbox One unless they REALLY show me something fantastic I can't live without. Considering everything they tried to do, and with more of the "sneaky not telling" stuff coming out almost daily, I just can't justify rewarding them for trying to pull one over on the consumers when we know they will try again in some manner.

It's probably easier for me to make that decision since I skipped the 360/PS3 and really didn't miss them. If it's one thing, there is no shortage of games to play (good or otherwise) even w/o jumping on them, but each generation still pulls you in to see what the offerings are. So far, neither offering is showing me anything special that I can't live w/o and with what seems like shady marketing (and let's face it, we don't really know how honest Sony was being either) I think I'll play this one pretty relaxed and see how it all boils down before making any $500 decisions.
