Hey guys, I was emailing a fellow Anandtech member on gmail regarding modded Xbox and sneaky Gmail displayed some advertisments. One caught my eye:

Reduzco.com is selling Xboxes retail for $149.99--nothing special. What made the deal warm was the $40 rebate.

has the Xbox ever been lock modded since it was first officially released, or are the current crop of Xboxes the same as the initial release Xbox consoles?
 
Heh i see this site on eBay a lot and they have rebate stuff etc.
The down fall is the shipping costs are jacked up pretty badly.
$10 for a green controller? No way...

Versions 1.0 and 1.1 are the best for modding. Solders already in the spots. Just gotta heat it and stick the wire in. 😀

Bah - 1.5s aren't too bad. 1.6s are kind of a pain - but still completely doable. It just requires some fairly accurate soldering.
 
This price seems too good to be true, and I worry about the site. Never heard of them, and can't find much information about them. The rebate form, moreover seems hinky to me.

The rebate form is made to look like it's somehow an official Microsoft Game Studios rebate, but it is NOT. It is simply from the retailer itself. Couple that with the $20 shipping, and I think I would pass.

Thanks for the deal, though, if not for the site, this would be HOT.

Not so much with the X3's- you actually have to clear the spots up.
 
doesn't sound very legit ...

where would you guys recommend to get a modded xbox? I am in the market for one and bad experience soldering a TV-card for my old PC makes me reconsider doing the modding myself ... 😉
 
So im guessing that if i were to buy and xbox today, it would most likey be v1.6?
is there anyway to get an older version, say refurbs?
 
Pay with a credit card and dispute the charges if it does sour. Also I'd be worried about the rebate as well. But if they offer a rebate and you sign the form, you have agreed to that contract as part of the sale. If they reneg on the rebate, technically they reneg on the entire purchase and you can try to dispute that whole thing with your CC company.
 
yeah if you buy an xbox today it will most likely be a 1.6. The new revisions are moddable, but if you're wary of soldering d0 you're going to have to rebuild the lpc which is something like 4 points the same size as d0.
