Xbox Modding??

Ok, So my son's and I have an Xbox and was looking at all the COOL things you can do, once you have modded? Anyone willing to share there experience of modding?

Thanks in advance.

Absolutely the BEST thing you can do for your xbox. Piece of cake to do if you are somewhat handy with a soldering iron, and if not, get a solderless one.

Check out xbox-scene for all the info you could ever ask for and more.

I  xbox media center

Hey thanks...

But I really wanted to get some feedback from everyone here. Kinda like talking about things in the office. Get a better feel for things.

So, since you have modded, have you tried playing some ISO (offsite backup) images?

If you have an xbox and don't have it modded you are missing out.

Easy to do (I suggest TSOP mods if you are not going to use Live)
Xbox Media Center (the best thing ever)
Rip your games to Hdd and play from there (2nd best)
In Game Reset!!!! 🙂
and on and on and on

Yeah, second the TSOP mod if you don't care about ever playing on live.

As for "getting a better feel of it", do you have any specific questions? If you are going to get a chip, it is a simple process.

-order chip
-disassemble xbox
-install chip
-flash chip with new BIOS (they ship with the "legal" cromwell bios for running linux. You have to download your own for what you want to use it for......ie Evox)
-FTP into xbox and backup HD
-Install new hard drive (Games are big, and the stock one is small <10gb. Get yourself a 200gig 🙂 )
-Put xbox back together
-Kick yourself in the nuts for not modding your xbox sooner

It has been a couple of months since I have done one, so my info might be a little out of date. But if you have any questions, just ask!

go with a decent chip since with newer xbox's you have to open it up and soldering anyway you mine as well add a chip to give you the ability to use live still.

best thing made for xbox is XBMC its my main use for my box. I have it linked too both mine and my roommates computer and works great!!!

go with an xecuter chip, you have to solder one thing (with the 2.3b). Then put on evox, xbmc, and dvd2xbox and get yourself a 200gb hd. You wont regret it 🙂

I've done 1 no-solder box about 2 months ago. Works like a charm.

I really liked the new XENIUM ICE chip which allows you to FTP the bios to the harddrive and then assign it to a chip bank from the get go. Made it real easy and quick if you have the files and know what's going on. I have everything on my box and I've never burned a single DVD or CD for use in the XBOX.

So far my shopping / downloading list should be:

Purchase 200GB Hard Drive ( any performance issues or preferance)

Purchase a Chip (Xenium Ice or others?)

Download Evox or XBMC

put it all together and then

P L A Y

Do I need to dedicate a small PC for this? I have a small 2.0ghz with 1gb ram and a 200GB hdrive with a DVD burner that I use as a storage and burn machine.

talking about backup/ripped/downloaded games is not allowed here.

If you go to xbox-scene like an earlier poster mentioned, there is a list of hard drives and their compatability with the Xbox.
I chose to go the non-solder route and choose an xecuter 2.3b lite +, great chip, easy to install.
I have Avalaunch and use it in conjunction with Quix, it is awesome.
You need a PC to FTP all your applications into your xbox such as Xbox Media Center, it does not need to be dedicated, only used when you need to install software onto your box.

I have read the xbox will only go up to 137GB? Is that true? If so why a 200GB HD?

They broke the 137 barrier a couple months ago. It was the limit until some of the newer bioses came out.

best hope you dont have a 1.6 version. you will need a really pointy soldering iron and a lot of patience. oh yeh there is no solderless for the 1.6 either.

Yeah I have a 200GB HD in my xbox, it just partitioned at 137 or wherever and then made a second parititon for the remaining space. No biggie.

I think most of the ppl. have covered all the pluses for the xbox. But I would suggest getting someone else to do the mod. There's still a lot of playing around with your xbox once the modchip installed.

What other cool stuff have you guys done with xmbc?
-Play all my anime videos, beats having to connect my laptop to the TV everytime I want to watch.
-Play Quicktime movie trailers
-Shoutcast!

The next step for me would be the wireless and maybe setup relax if I have time ... but it's pretty sweet where it is right now.

xbmc is off the hook. It can record internet music streams. Just put in an X3 this weekend. Best chip available period.

I use mine to play some of my old ROMs (Atarai, Arcade, etc). You can also dump your Game DVDs to the hard drive and play them from there so load times are much faster and such. Can't play on live from the HDD though but for single player it's nice.

Shameless selling of my moded xbox with a 120 gig and samsung drive. I love my xbox and if I didnt need another car or van so bad I would never sell it. I ftp my videos of rc racing onto mine and watch it alot. I have to admit since getting the xvga+ adapter to play it on my computer monitor in HD and modded the hex code to enable the DVD portion to a progressive player I dont game on mine much anymore.

I am really disappointed that MAMEoX cannot play some of the "newer" games. MK3 chokes with sound on and UMK3 runs out of memory. It's great for most arcade games but I guess the lack of memory in the Xbox is a major bottleneck.

I think I finally have to take this damned plunge. I don't want to play on live, I don't want to solder but I want to add space for emulators and roms.

I'd get a Xecuter 2.3 Lite+ if you can find one. Very easy to install and solderless. Does let you play on Live if you turn it off. Also get a bigger HDD and get SlaYer's auto installer disk. It's pretty much idiot proof.
