I do not wish to pirate games, as well as knowing anandtech does not condone such practices.
I do however want, in the near future:
Goof around with linux on it.
Play MAME on my TV easily.
Play movies on it easily.
As well as anything else the xbox programmer community can think of.
Am I still wrong if I chip my xbox without pirating games, and never intending to?
Just wish to know the consensus here, since it is a large community and can get lots of opinions.
Please try not to get the thread locked with hacker info.

You are evil regardless.

But I'd put a chip in it if I were you. You bought the device, you should be allowed to do with it what you want.

Most games are available to download on the internet. Most are DVD-R images, but they are slowly ripping a lot of them to fit on CDRs.

You aren't bad for putting it in. You void the warranty but that is it. If you don't pirate videogames, you aren't doing anything wrong. You can do whatever you please with the hardware. However, seeing as how most people on here pirate mp3s of copyrighted songs, I doubt they'd really care if you pirate games.

About a month ago 30 game ISOs were released from hackers in China. They Can be burned with a DVD-R, but as of now there are no mod chips or boot sequences available. The burned ISOs only work on developement X-box units.

I don't think you are a bad person for chipping your system. I used to chip my systems to play imports, but then I just started buying a japanese and north american machine with the dreamcast, ps2, gamecube, etc.

I read an article on this the other day. I guess you have to be pretty good with a sodering iron to get the mod chip to work. I feel its your machine and you can do what you want with it, as long as you don't do anything illegal like pirate games. If you want to write your own game for the XBOX, you should be able to and you'll need the mod chip for that.

The mod chips are out that allow you play your backups, whether they are CDR or DVD-R.

Thanks for the update! The website I normally check for this info mysteriously disappeared a week ago. Wonder if there is a correlation.

Putting a modchip in an XBox is like using an ice cream maker to wash your car.

Whatever floats your boat.

Putting a modchip in an X-Box is like removing the regional restrictions from a DVD-player. Halo costs 69.95 Euros here (The Netherlands), which is $65.28. Just as with DVDs which are over double the price here as they are in Canada, but with the regional restrictions you cannot by default play Canadian or US DVDs.
Besides, it is also a matter of tweaking the device to see if you can do it, although that may be a bit hard for you non-technical icecreamlover to understand ;)

A commercial car wash apparatus system costs several thousand Euros, which is several thousand dollars. Besides, it's also a matter of tweaking your ice cream maker to see if you can make it handle water streams mixed with soap, although that may be a bit hard for you non-carwashing Hollander to understand. ;)

Point: I think my metaphor holds. And my dad did ruin an ice cream maker trying to wash our car once.

Didn't think anyone would be so stupid as to use an icecream maker to wash a car ;)

It's your hardware, you should be able to do what you want with it, whether it's putting in a modchip or lighting it on fire. You paid for it and there's no reason to feel guilty or bad.

Look for a big price drop in xbox mod chips. Someone by the name of Mr. Sporty cracked the Xtender chip and released the code for anyone to program their own chips.
