Got it from freevideogames.com, so I have no idea when it was made. I got it about 1½~2 months ago. The packaging was pretty new though; one of the screenshots it had on the back was for Halo 2, among other not-so-encouraging signs.

What's the manufacturer date on the UPC? If it's like March 04+ there's a pretty good chance it's a 1.6. Of course the only way to be positive is to open it and check for the Xcalibur on the video chip (think it was marked Xcalibur)

I can't remember, and since I don't take my XBox with me to work I can't find out until later tonight.

I may just wind up opening the damn thing tonight. At least I'll know.

So assuming you don't wanna do XBOX Live, all you need to do is solder some points on the board and mod the TSOP?

Sooo... I can get a used XBOX for $100 from Gamestop and mod it to play backups? Hmmm... tempting...very tempting.

When the chip is on it forces the XBOX to load the BIOS that is flashed to the chip. The new BIOS is what allows the XBOX to do lots of things like play games/apps off of CDR/W or DVD+/-R, use larger HDDs, etc... When the chip is off the standard onboard BIOS loads and the XBOX runs like a normal stock XBOX (which allows you to play on Live).
