I have a "broken" Xbox from a friend (the only thing that doesn't work is the disc open switch...I think). anyway, I'm thinking of converting it to a regular pc, bu just taking out the motherboard put it in a PC case, get a new PSU, replace the disk drive, reformat the hard drive, and try and make a converter for the 3-pin TV to a speaker line out, and a VGA port.

I just have a couple of questions.
1) would a 250-watt PSU be effecient?
2) Is there anything that seems like it could be a potential downfall?

First off, even though the XBox uses a standard 20 pin ATX connector, the wiring is not the same as standard ATX PSUs. I would personally try to use the existing power supply You will need to mod the BIOS to connect a different hard drive.(the drive will have to be prepared on another computer) This can be done with a mod chip or soft-modding if you have a newer XBox. Also the DVD-Rom drive uses a propietary power connector. As for software, there is already a distro of Gentoo available pre-compiled for the Xbox, that is definitely a good starting point. It should also be mentioned that the controller ports are USB so with some soldering you can get a kb/mouse hooked up.

Check out XBox scene for more details. Good luck nd happy modding.

but nonetheless, as it stands I can't do a regular mod or keep it in its case, since the "disc open" button doesn't work, and he lost most of the screws so i can either find out each kind of screw, and buy 'em or i can use a case that's just sitting around anyway.

BTW

I have a broken XBox, (mainboard shorted out), if you needed any parts I would be happy to send you some for the cost of shipping. PM me if you need another switch/screws.
