Just curious - what programs did you use to install a new hard drive with? Apparently Slayer's EvoX Installer is the easiest route to go to auto-format and prep the hard drive, although I've been hearing a lot about FireFvckers. (Supposedly kicks Slayer's ass, although it's not located on xbins) I'm seeding Slayer's EvoX right now, another 2 hours to go.

BTW, I have a 2.3+ Lite - install went without a hitch whatsoever and literally took 2 minutes to install the chip. (Which was a complete 180 from the god awful 2.2+ Lite experience I had - I credit it to the sharp pogo pin that makes contact with d0)

And Xbox Media Player is the "defacto" media program for media playing on modded XBox's, correct? (Sorry I've been out of the loop for 6+ months - I used yamp before which kind of sucked IMO)

Oh yea - I'm confused about all this HD locking/unlocking. I leave it unlocked with the chip enabled, but lock it when I go on Live (or in other words, disable the chip)? Or is that completely unnecessary now?

I usually edit the Evox ini to create a menu option that will format the drive.
You can find that howto in the tutorials section on xbox scene.

I've heard of Xbox media player and xbox media center i think the media center is
the new standard.

you have to lock your hdd to get the original xbox bios to access it. You can only play on live using the original bios.
Therefore you have to have a locked hdd to play on live.

Locking a hdd is a one time thing, basically you have a program
generate a key based on the hdd serial, xbox bios eeprom etc and put the hdd into a secure access mode,
(that may not be the most technical description, it may even be completely wrong). Normally when the xbox boots up
it unlocks the drive with the key it has. If you lock the hdd, you can use it both when the modchip is on or off. If you
leave the hdd unlocked then you can only use the xbox with the modchip on. Not all drives can be locked (this is being debated though)
and if you lock a drive and lose the key you're not going to be able to use that drive anywhere else if you ever need to troubleshoot or whatnot.

hope this helps.

Hey Bulls - that makes absolute perfect sense. I read like 3 descriptions on locking/unlocking and was more confused every time I read one.

hey paruh - yea I read through a few of those. I have a Samsung so I'm pretty blessed with being able to burn ISOs to CD-RW's with ease.

Thanks for the help, got it up and running about 2 weeks ago :)

New question - can I format a HD with Slayers and install EvoX on another 120gb hard drive on MY XBox that I am sending to my cousin? He wants a media player but is a total newb with computers. I would just format, install, and then he would backup the key to his computer and lock it so he can use it right? (If he wants to get on Live which he does to play Rainbow Six with me)

"Live" and modded Xbox caught my attention. Be careful that you're not running a hacked bios when you play on "Live" because it'll get you banned.

The BIOS is on the mod chip  With it off, how would one be detected?

But thanks for the help!

It shouldn't be, just make sure you have the auto connect option disabled in the MS Dashboard. Otherwise certain games will try to connect to XBLive automatically. For example, I think Project Gotham Racing does this so it can display a leader board that it shows even when playing single player.

Erm, doesn't installing EvoX replace the MS Dashboard?
<--- doesn't know, hasn't gotten to that step yet since he doesn't have a free DVD drive.

No, unless you rename it to xboxdash.xbe

The way the majority of owners have it setup, with the chip on and a BIOS that boots something other than xboxdash.xbe (Avalaunch, EvoX, something else, then MS Dashboard if nothing else found).

And yea, it shouldn't be detected with the chip off. There are rumors that supposedly it can be now (like new revisions scan for other .XBE files on the hard drive) but that's all rumor at this point. PGR2 - you have to be signed in manually before showing the leader board.
