I'm amazed at how well does that stuff work. Movies, pictures, music .... the whole thing.
I'll have to paly around with the settings and stuff some more, but im really really impressed by that app...

I've got all my movies and musc (all legal...of course) shared off a sun ultra machine via samba ... finding the stuff is really easy (just hit the workgroup and the machine...and booya) and all the movies (divx mostly) play!

heh even porn off my housemates pcs and stuff plays (heh i dont think he realizes everyone in the house can see the hidden !mpgs! folder... heehee)

yep, it's pretty slick.

I've been using Xbox Media Player for a while now, but I really like the interface in Media Center.

 whose computer are you posting on? If it's yours, why waste money on an xbox to do the same things you can already do?

my computer cant output to an HDTV last time I checked.... plus my desktop also doesnt have a remote, optical out, progressive scan dvd player (or a dvd player at all...).

Not to mention that prefer to use it as a desktop and theres no way i could make it as organized as XBMC withouth hindering its usability as a desktop. Especially since I go between xp and gentoo on daily basis.

Oh yeah i cant play xbox games on it either...

I keep thinking about buying an x-box to hack it. but I'm a total kn0b.

I don't even know what 'soldering' means. :(

I have my PS2 pretty well pimped out (120GB harddrive, flip-top lid, painted white, etc), but none of that required a mod chip.

What's GC?

The only thing you're right about is not playing xbox games on the pc, and I'm not even sure of that. If you could though, would the games support super-high resolutions, like 800x600? :p

oh, I get it... GC = Game Cube? Actually no, I don't have any consoles. I don't see why I should buy what I already own (cpu, gpu, ram, cd drive, and a hdd or ram card) just to play some games (in 640x480) that would be out for the PC anyway if not for console makers paying game designers under the table. "Luver" though? I guess I just don't get it, I'm '2 old 2 b kewl' :(

Why buy two speakers if you allready have one...why buy two cars if you allready have one, why buy two forks if you allready have one, why buy a garbage can if you have the one outside on the curb.....

Sometimes one is more efficient at doing its job than the other, sometimes one is tied up so ya need another, sometimes its more convienient to have two of the same thing.

agreed.

that's why I have 2 PS2's. one in the living room, and one in my bedroom, so if I'm bored and my roommate is watching tv or something, I can still play :p

i used a regular ethernet cable and plugged it into the hub in my room. We have a router on the ground floor, so the xbox gets an IP thru dhcp. I never had problems with it, though you need to reboot the xbox if you start it with eth0 unplugged

You also have to have you xbox modded in order to network it to your PC.

And if you already have that done and still can't see the XBOX... turn off your firewall. Modded Xbox's are the most kick ass game machines on the planet. This is not an opinion. ;)

I use my 2.8HT machine for development mostly and dont wanna mess up my setup by adding some easy-to-use-on-gamepad interface and all of that crap. You can play the games at 1024i with the HDTV pack (what im planning on doing), something YOU CANNOT do with a pc. I have yet to see a card with component hdtv output.

theres an amulator out there, but only one game works for it. The games are really only an extra bonus for me, im doing it mostly for the media

Link to more info on this XBMC?

Is this a new software package for the X-Box or some sort of hack job?

You're logic certainly does not hold up:

1. People buy multiple devices when they server specialized purposes. There are a variety of different shovels out there for different purposes...most people have a variety of them in their sheds to use for the purpose they were intended. Sure you could proabaly get 90% of the work done with one shovel...but why not buy two shovels and get 100% of the work done. There are a variety of reasons that paying an extra $150 for an Xbox makes sense.

2. It is rare that console makers pay game designers to make them exclusive. The console maker couldn't stay in business if this was a regular practice. Sure MS might be doing this in certain cases (like Ninja Gaiden), but their main source of income is from Software sales...so paying the game makers negates this main source of income.

It's a really nice program developed privately. However, since there's no open source XBox SDK, the binaries were compiled with an official MS XBox SDK, making any binaries you happen to find illegal.
