Xbox Media Center Extender......

Ok, I was thinking of picking up the Xbox media center extender but I've heard from reviews that the performance is very slow.

Now my question for those that use it is this.
Is it slow because it strickly runs off of the dvd drive or because of the xbox hardware?

I've been considering soft-modding my xbox and ripping the image to the hard drive and running it from there. Should be a lot faster than running it off of the disc.

Note, I'm obviously planning on buying this because I need the remote.

Anyone try this combo and/or think it would work?

You're much better off modding your xbox and getting the (free) homebrew XBMC. I'm telling you XBMC kicks major ass. Modding your box isn't that hard, and you should be able to find a regular xbox "dvd" remote for like $20 if you look.

True, but I have a fully setup windows media center box running in my living room and it would be nice to extend that to another room.
Just curious if running the app from the hard drive would make it any faster than running off the dvd drive.

Has noone used the Windows Media Center extender on this forum? Just curious of it's performance and everyday use.

XBMC looks nice, but it cannot interface with TV Tuners for live playback, pausing, recording, etc.. Great for normal video playback I'm sure though.

I don't have experience with the xbox media extender but I've used the Linksys Media extender and It works fine. The only bad thing is it's kind of expensive for what it does imo.

It's slow because it is running off the DVD. You're probably better off modding it or waiting for the Xbox360 to come out. The 360 will have media center extender built in to it and will be able to handle HD content.

So if I mod my xbox and run the media extender off of the Hard drive then it should perform ok?

I am considering the xbox360 for that very reason, but I'd still like to get this one working then I can just hook this up to a different tv.
Thanks!

I'd go check xbox-scene.com and see if anyone over there has had success with it. I haven't tried it myself but it does make sense that it would go faster running off the hard drive.
