right now i have an HTPC in my living room with an hd tuner and the like. what i would like to do is sell the PC and buy another hd tuner and an xbox 360. then outfit my main PC with 2 hd tuners, and hook up the 360 premium as an extender.

my main areas of interest are music and live/recorded tv playback. can the 360 stream the hdtv from the pc? i think i read somewhere thats its SD only.

can you use a core system with no hdd as an extender? if i can find a cheap one i was gonna put it in my bedroom as a second extender.

thanks.

Yes, you can stream HDTV from the PC as long as you have Windows Media Center Edition.

Yes you can use the core with no HDD as an extender.

THANKS! ive got vista ultimate on my main rig.

next question: up-converting dvds (720p)? only with HDMI or VGA connection? or will component cables work?

if i use VGA, does the VGA kit have the standard mini-jack for audio? or does it use RCA connections? i think my TV will only use input from the 3.5mm jack when using the VGA input.

my tv in my bedroom is a tv/monitor and can go to 1440x900. will the 360 go to that res?

You'll need VGA I believe.

The VGA cable has the Red/White RCA jacks, but it comes with the adapter to go 3.5mm so no worries.

Unless they changed in a recent firmware there is no 1440x900. Only 1920x1080, 1366x768, and the lower ones.

AFAIK, DVD up-conversion works on VGA only.

For audio, you will need an RCA->mini-jack converter (which you can get at dollar store).
