I am looking into either modding my current or getting a new Xbox to mod with the intention of turning it into a media center. Straeaming audio, video, pics from ym PC to the media center, and recording TV if possible.

I would preer a solderless, easy to install chip if possible.
Anyone point me in the right direction as far as the hardware and software I will need for the best media center type solution. I also would not be advers to being able to play backup Xbox games (and PS2 games if possible).

Like to keep the project under $75 if possible (not including Wifi bridge).

Thank you.

No Xbox live and if I did, it would be with my 2nd xbox.

Went to X-box scene, but is a bit cluttered.

Any direct info on a softmod or site (other then xbox scene if their is one for it).

Seems like way to go for me since I will never use XBOX live on it and really just want it for a media center/ HTPC.

Thanks.

I don't believe there is anything that will let you record TV with your Xbox (it would need to be a hardware add-on if there were) and you won't be able to emulate PS2 games (N64 ones barely work).

Many thanks.

After this mod, I can still have my kid play his Xbox games right?
I may do this mod to my original one instead of buying a 2nd one to do it :)

no need to buy a 2nd one. he'll be able to play his xbox games just fine.
if you want faster loading times, install a new hard drive, and rip the games to the hard drive.

also, in case you have an HDTV, dont forget to get the XBOX HD Av Pack.

Yep, already have the HD pack.

Is it possible to wtach DVD's in 480p (not that it matters since I have a PS DVD player.

OOh, I may do this tomorrow on my day off (after I EQ my Hometheater's Sub with a parametric EQ :)

Thanks again.

Looks like I will go with the Advance soft mod :)

Much easier to do? With a gamesave softmod, you slap a saved game on the HD, run the game, and press a controller button a few times. Then, you're done.

yes sir.
granted, with the stock 8 gig hard drive, you will only be able to fit 2 or 3 games.
no, you cannot stream games from your pc to the xbox.

get a nice big HD for cheap, softmod, go nuts.

easier as in never have to get off your butt to buy something.

depends on whether you've used your xbox before. if it's new, you have to
a) buy a game
b) buy an action replay memory card or "construct" a usb one
c) find AR software if you didn't buy the card
d) find a gamesave

how hard all that is depends on whether you have the game and a save. he does, which makes it easier but you still have to buy the card or hack a usb key

the HD swaptrick is free and can be done just as quickly. but if he already has splinter cell and a few saves that'd probably be the way to go.
