xBox makes me dizzy

FoBoT

No Lifer
we recently got an xBox

i have 2 games , medal of honor - d day and serious sam

i get dizzy/naseous after 10-15 minutes of playing them

i sit 4-6 ft from the TV, first we had it hooked to a 25" , now it is on a 36" TV, same thing on both

i have never had this problem with computer games where i sit close to the monitor (within 2 ft)

anybody know why? can i take dramamine or something?

i don't get sick when we play tetris or toe jam and earl, it seems to be the 1st person perspective i think

You can take dramamine, but what a drag to have to do that every time. But it works. Hopefully it's just those games. I felt sick after playing Castle Wolfenstein for a few minutes...but that's the only game that does it to me.

It might be because of the lower refresh rate of TVs. TVs have something like 56-60hz refresh where as decent monitors have 75-85hz or higher.

i got the medal of honor game first, i was hoping it was just that game

then i got serious sam and almost barfed/passed out/went into shock after ~45 minutes of playing that

i'll try the dramamine, thanks ivol07

Yeah, it's the refresh rate. It's like staring at a strobe light. You'll get used to it eventually.

if i turn on a strobe light in the room while i play, will that help or will my head explode?

its because the framerate is really low on thoes two games on xbox. that used to happen to me with quake1 way back in the day when computers were barely powerful enough to run it. plus they are first person shooters, it wont happen on other games like RPG's or racing games. its the whole your-eyes-tell-your-brain-your-moving-but-your-ears-disagree.

You are very much correct about "the whole your-eyes-tell-your-brain-your-moving-but-your-ears-disagree" thing. But it wouldn't be because of low framerate. Actually, a more realistic environment (higher fps) would confuse your brain even more.

Chances are that you don't have an issue any more on the PC is because you got used to it.

I'm guessing that the larger display is what's doing the OP in.

its motion sickness. your eyes are trying to convince your brain that your physically moving, but the rest of your body disagrees. especially your ears, the fluid in them rolls around according to gravity(developed thru evolution) to try and help you understand your relation to the floor(survival reasons). needless to say it upsets your natural responses to these things and makes you sick. i guess you can over come it(why can i play 8 hours of counterstrike?)

This is probably why most people seem to move their body/head in relation to the movement on the screen, so that their body is moving and trying to overcome the effect that just seeing a moving image gives you.

That's my excuse for doing it, anyway 😉
