From IGN.com:
For all the talk of Xbox Live, no one was sure gamers were actually ready (or even eager) for the online revolution. After a week on the market, it's safe to say gamers are indeed interested in playing online. In it's first week of release, 150,000 Xbox Live Starter kits were sold according to Microsoft. This easily surpasses Microsoft expectations of 100,000 subscribers by the end of the year.

For those who missed the Live train, more Starter Kits are already on retail shelves with enough in production to keep stores supplied throughout the holiday season.
Oh yeah baby!

Wonder which execs at Sony are committing seppuku right about now? ;)

And that my friend...is the awesomeness that is online gaming.
Think about this...if XBL costs $50 per year (which is more than reasonable for the experience it delivers)...then JUST AT THEIR CURRENT NUMBERS, there goes $7.5M to MS EVERY YEAR!

Who's losing money on hardware now? :D

I admit, this totally took me by shock.

Got your invite Geese, can't wait to play something with you.

Hopefully this something is either MechAssault or NBA 2K3, cause otherwise it's nothing :p

It should be noted that this has been tried several times...

It was never quite ready, but perhaps the time is now...

Sega tried this years and years ago, way back in the days of 28.8k modems with their Sega CD system.

I think there have been one or two small play tries since then, and Sony has done a lot of talking... one nice thing about MS is that they can afford to spend whatever it costs to do it right the first time. The actual price tag is less imporant to them because they know that if they do it right now, they can lock up the market for the next 20 years...

Look at the numbers on Everquest and Ultima Online, both those games make EA and Sony an absurd amount of cash...

Shame that Sierra never figured out how to charge for Counter-Strike, that game today is still being played by hundreds of thousands...

I gave Earth and Beyond a try, but not enough story... looking foward to Star Wars Galaxies now... ;)

Yea, they priced it right... $20/month is too much for many gamers, but $50/yr is just the cost of a game, and it cuts down on the cost of billing every month.

Well..the Starter Kit is $50 which includes the headset and a 12 month subscription.

MS hasn't released the yearly/monthly price of Live after the first year...but most folks are thinking somewhere around $50 a year.

Last game system I owned was a PlayStation, and that didn't get used much...

Last heavy use game system I owned was the Super Nintendo...

I guess I'm just old... :)

Of course, my first heavy use game system was ColecoVision, I remember playing Space Invaders, Gorf, Tapper, BurgerTime, Q*Bert, Frogger, etc. on that thing...

Then I had a Nintendo for a long time, then the SNES...

I actually owned the 3DO system and Atari Jaguar for awhile, but when they came out I was working at a video game store and we got them super cheap as they were closing out, at one point I owned every game for both systems and paid only about $500 for everything. :)

Owned a Nintendo 64 for about three months, played Mario 64 for awhile, but it was inferior to Super Mario World, the best mario ever. ;)

Then I bought a PlayStation to play Final Fantasy, only game I played on it...

I play games on the computer now, mostly Counter-Strike when I need to left off steam... ;)
