XBox Live People

No Lifer
I am going to get xbox live w/in the end of the week, or possible after next paycheck. however, right now I do not have a router or a switch or anything. just my cable modem hooked up to my computer, straight up. i am just wondering what all I will need in order to connect both my PC and my XBox to the internet. will a simple switch work? or do I need a router as well? thx.

Just run your Xbox and PC to a switch, and then uplink the switch to the cable modem. Probably cost like $20.

If your switch doesn't support NAT (I imagine it wouldn't), you need to direct the ports UDP 88, UDP 3074, and TCP 3074 to your Xbox's IP address.

well yea, my PC is on 24/7. i used to run a linux server through my PC when i was in the dorm, to have 2 pc's on one line. I can do that w/the XBox just as easily? will the network connection be as good this way as it would with a router? because I have spare nics laying around at home.

Well, iirc if you use 2 NICs in one computer, then you'd have to enable ICS. A wired router probably runs like $10-15 used on the FS/FT forum, a wireless brand new probably <$40 at any store. I'd rather go the router route and have the ability to add/plug in other stuff when needed.

yea thats true. but what is ICS? is it bad to enable that? i mean if I can do this by not having to spend any money at all, since i have other nics sitting around, that would probably be a little better 🙂

ICS = Windows Internet Connection Sharing. A software router, if you will. I don't know how exactly it is in terms of speed - if it's slower or whatnot, I'd much rather have hardware doing the sharing than software though.

Just get a router.

Agreed. You can get a router from OM, OD, BB, etc for like $20-$40 these days. Can even get a wireless one and get the wireless adaptor for the XBox as well.

If nothing else, head over to the HOt Deals forum. There's always routers in there.
