Xbox Live - Need more Free content

TallBill

The only game so far that I've seen free content is Guitar Hero 3. There are a few songs that pop up now and again for free. Keep giving me freebies and I might be more inclined to buy the song packs!

Everything else seems like a nickle and dime affair. Garbage compared to PC gaming.

there are other games with free contents not just Gh3.

Rainbow 6 Vegas has to free map packs, GRAW2 has some free stuff.

If you have patience, many of the extra packs eventually go free. I'm in no hurry so I can wait till they are free and grab them. I don't mind if they are old either.

That's a double edged sword. Just because you feel that way certainly isn't indicative of everyone. If you give away a song or two for free, (like the Halo song) then people are going to want/expect all other songs to be free.

Honestly - I'm happy with what I get out of Live. There's stuff I wouldn't pay for, and there's stuff I would pay for. PC gaming is also, well, non-uniform. Patches out the ass, disparaties in hardware, graphics, no uniformity in general. I gave up PC gaming a long time ago and haven't been happier since.

Microsoft wants to give all content worth. Since there is no real independent development for content like there is on the PC, developing anything for download needs to be done by people who are actually getting paid to do it. Because of this, these costs are passed on to the consumer.

I don't necessarily mind paying for content - I just wish they did a better job at letting you fully see/understand what that content is. They do a great job of this with arcade games mandating a demo for each game - but for in-game DLC, it would be nice to have similar preview/demo options available to download for free. In your Guitar Hero example, I think rather than putting more free content out, it would be nice if you could download a free 20 second clip of the song/pack of songs.

Paying for crap like picture packs and themes is a bit absurd, though - but even with those it would be nice to be able to actually see what it is you're paying for.

I guess that I understand that. I just enjoy some free content along with paying for new content. Maybe downloading 3 new GH3 songs will inspire me to download the 2 song packs as well.

I'm aware - it's not intuitive nor is it very useful. The fact that I am even buying content on a console means I wish to avoid PCs altogether.

Well I'd recommend avoiding downloading any tracks for Guitar Hero as I think the pricing and download structure is poor. Granted, my personal boycott has done nothing as thousands of others have gone ahead and bought them.

Save the $6.50 and put it towards rock band.

But your console is nothing more than a closed architecture desktop PC. You are missing out by not playing in both sandboxes.
