Xbox Live issue ... strict NAT (plugged directly from modem to 360)

So I got a new ISP that is Cable and 6mb, coming from 3mb dsl.

However so far the cable sucks ass.

When I plug my 360 directly to my modem, I get a strict NAT, which makes no sense.

When I plug it to my router, then to my modem via the router, I can change the settings on my router to make it work in open NAT, however when actually playing on live, it definitely is using a strict NAT setting.

I called my ISP 2 days ago at like 8pm and they said on their end everything looks fine and the network guys weren't actually there, but to call XBL support and ask em if there is anything they can do.

Already knowing the answer that it had to do w/ports not being open, I called XBL and they told me to verify that my ISP had the correct ports open.

So I called back my ISP and told the guys the ports that need to be open and what protocol. He emailed the network guys and said I would hear back in a couple days.

So today i hadn't heard anything so I called em back, again late, because I had things to do. The guy said he hadn't heard anything back from the network department yet, but they leave around 5pm. He also said it normally takes 72 hours to hear something back.

So this is pretty ridiculous in my eyes. But he also told me tomorrow to call before 5pm and ask to speak directly to the network guys so I can talk to them about the ports and stuff. So that is what I plan to do tomorrow, and if they can't do anything, I'm goign back to my DSL. luckily i did not cancel it yet.

So I'm jsut wondering if anybody else has ever experienced this, where you have strict NAT when directly from modem to xbox360.

I used to have that issue with my first xbox playing MW with BHN, it just eventually disappeared. Games didn't even lag from what i could remember...

I had the same problem a while ago.

I changed my router settings to make my Xbox a DMZ host and bam, the problem went away.

well the issue I have doesn't even involve a router, that is the issue here.

and when i DO get a router involved, and get rid of strict NAT (and I too have set DMZ up), even though my 360 says it is open NAT ... it isn't.

i know for a fact it truly isn't because I can't connect to my friend that I can connect to with my other ISP. and also when I find many 'green' connections in ssf4 (best possible connection), it will get "unable to join session" messages 4/5 times. I've also had it drop in the middle of a match after i once connected saying "host has left session", takes me back to the menu, then I see the same guy's lobby open still with the same amount of people it had before (minus 1 cause I'm not there).

so there is definitely something going on at my ISP level. hope they can tell me today whether or not the ports are open, and if they havent fixed it after 3 days, or they ARE open and I still have the issue, im cancelling it.

Some modems have built in routers so you can plug them directly into a switch. I noticed this when I first got DSL at my new place - the modem I bought was giving my router a 192.168.x.x address. Went into the settings and found the modem itself had a pretty decent router/firewall in it - even though it only had 1 port on it.

That said, I noticed I randomly get NAT messages. Sometimes it shows at Light NAT, sometimes Moderate, sometimes Strict. It's random for no apparent reason, and I usually have no issues connecting to games from my end.

Plug the modem directly into a computer, find out the gateway IP, type that into your web browser, most likely you'll be brought to a page which allows you to set the DMZ. Sounds like your modem has a built in router.

SunnyD ... this is the modem I have ... http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Surfb.../dp/B000JV9LUK

I don't think it has a router built into it at all, and I even asked them if it was a router/modem combo when I ordered the service. my dsl came w/the router/modem combo and it had an antenna on it, as well as 4 other ports to connect network cables into it.

I also HAVE gone to some webpage, think it was 192.168.0.1 and it was like the modems page, which showed me some of the values of the modem, like the frequency and stuff like that, but nothing could be changed.

so your cable sucks ass because you don't know what you are doing?

So you want me to tell me what I can do to fix it or just be a dick?

Again, I'm pretty sure it doesn't hvae a router built in. I can try this when I get home however just to see what happens when I try to connect dierctly to the gateway IP.

Do you have a problem connecting or playing? If not, you're in search for a cure to a problem that doesn't exist. NAT has zero effect on lag, only on connecting to others with "real" NAT issues.

NAT doesn't even exist without a router - that's probably the problem. The xbox is looking for something that doesn't exist, and it doesn't know how to interpret what it finds. Having the modem directly into the 360 is certainly extemely unusual. But that doesn't mean you have a problem.

it is not lag issues at all, it is simply even connecting to other users. and then getting completely dropped connections while playing. its not laggy then gets better ... it completely drops.

and the thing about this cable company (which is utter shit but the only thing I can get in this building) is that with the TV, they are somehow using a directTV connection that is distributed over the entire building, almost like they are subletting it. I've seen times on my cable where it says "DirectTV NO SIGNAL" even though the cable company is called MDU Communications.

I would not be surprised it the internet is this way as well. And maybe because of that, the actual place I'm connecting to has these ports blocked or something.

I am about to get on the phone right now for the final time with them. If they can't fix this port issue I am cancelling immediately.

so yea im cancelling my ISP tonight ... they have no clue wtf is going on, claiming all ports are open.

and the way this tech support was talking, he had no clue wtf he was talking about.

told him like 3x there was no router involved, then he asked me about my router settings.

so much fail on his part ... just f it.

That has nothing to do with your NAT issue. A blocked NAT will prevent certain connections, period. If you get connected then drop, thats not a NAT issue, that's just a shitty connection.

According to the link you posted the modem "supports up to 63 users" meaning it has to have a NAT.

it says it supports up to 63 users with the use of a router or switch.

again unless i'm missing something there is no way to change settings in the modem at all.

also the company name is MDU Communications.

google "mdu communications internet" and LOL at the first few results 🙂

PM me your computer's IP address when it's hooked directly into the modem, I'm willing to bet it's an internal IP, meaning the modem DOES support NAT.

According to the uTorrent forums, it has it and it's not able to be turned off in software :/

The Motorola SB5101 is just a modem, no router. So if you are getting NAT errors when connected directly to the modem, it has to be something on the ISP side, and if they claim that there's nothing on their side I agree that they're clueless (or lying, which I've seen before). If that is your only option, I'd go back to the DSL you had before since it worked for you and the difference in rated speed won't make any difference at all to the XBOX.

I understand that it appears to be a modem, but it also appears if you do some googling (type in SB5101 NAT) that this particular modem also causes problems for others on XBL and with torrents, with most software complaining that it is strict NAT. Perhaps it has some sort of built in firewall or other software, but it is apparent that it does get in the way for some reason.
