Xbox Live connection problems, December 2011 Update

My dad got Batman: Arkham City for Christmas this year, popped it into his Xbox360 and hit "Update" after signing into his XBL profile.

Now, after a successful update of the Xbox360 System Software, the machine can't see XBL. It connects to the internet, but no matter what, it won't connect to Xbox Live. I've re-created the wifi connection, tried auto and manual IP settings, and even wired.

No matter what I do, it says it can't connect to XBL. My launch-day 360 Premium, updated, rebooted and signed in fine (after I accepted the new ToS). His is a fairly new Xbox 360 S 4gb Kinect model. They bought it around July, I think.

Any ideas? I thought XBL was just overloaded, but my 360 will connect just fine, and I know that the 2011 Fall Update caused some issues with connecting thanks to Google, but that should be all resolved by now, almost two weeks after release?

Has anything changed on his network between the last time he used Live and now? It could be something in the router settings, have you confirmed that it is setup as it previously was when the connection was working?

The connection worked just 5 minutes before the Fall Update was installed. Today was the first day in about a month his Xbox had been turned on. He turned it on, connected to XBL, updated to the Dec6th update, and after the reboot, can't connect to XBL.

Are your dad's & your 360 on the same network? If so then it's really odd that one will connect but the other will not. You could try doing a hard reset of the router and then changing back to the settings that you had for it. Although you might want to try a soft reset. I had some weirdness where I couldn't play Paramount Blu Rays on my PS3 because of an odd DNS issue. I had to restart my DNS server (I have a separate server handling DNS/DHCP and other duties) and once I did it was fixed. It could be something in the routing tables for your router are just off for Xbox and a reset will fix it. I'm not sure if you've already tried this or not but you might also want to try resetting the network connection to factory default settings.

I'd say remove the router from the equation and see if it will connect if wired straight to the modem.
