Xbox Live/360 Pros: 2 people voice chat on 1 console?

A question that may be easily answered:

Is it possible to have two people voice chat on one console using an XBL account + a guest account?

Situation: My friend and I were playing co-op campaign split screen, and online with a friend. We had 3 people total. As the primary XBL account on the split screen setup, I was able to voice chat to my bud across the internet, but my friend, sitting next to me couldn't hear any of the chat, or speak. I couldn't figure out a way to invite him.

Is it possible to set a voice chat up with multiple people on one console?

nope you each have to have a live gold account to chat. If he has a gold account once he signs into that account he can chat no problem.
