XBOX: How to repair it? *EDIT*

*EDIT* Well, the drive, even after compressed air, is still misreading. Sometimes when I boot up I have to boot up a second time because the first boot up there is a disc read error. Then on Crimson skies often it will give me a disc reading error, and I realize lately the freezing on max payne 2 was the same thing. Who would I bring this to to get it repaired (no warranty), and could I replace the dvd drive myself(if it is that)?

FWIW I will be getting an extended warranty on my next console. I treat them well and don't overuse them but the PS2 bailed after 2 years and this xbox is only a year old.

--

Well that didn't work. It asks you to put in the cleaning cd, which I did, but the fvcking lens is too dirty for me to even put it over to the track required, so I have to open this POS and clean the lens manually.

Has anybody got an idea how to do it? I can find nothing like screws except for two small tiny black plastic things, which refuse to come out...

OLD:Two brand new flawless games are having mild problems running on my xbox with read errors, so I figure it has to be the lens.

I've bought the pelican cleaning kit for "CDs, DVDs, and Lens", but I haven't opened it and can't really see how it cleans the lens. Has anybody here had luck with these sorts of things for cleaning their console lens? Found it

Typical lens cleaning discs have ~6 small brushes on the playable side of the disc. The lens has to move across their path, & the lens is physically brushed clean.

Try using a can of compressed air - open the drive and spray the fvck out of it for a good 10-20 seconds. Let the dust settle out, repeat.

If that doesn't work you'll need to open it by turning it over. There is 1 screw under each black foot, and 1 screw under 2 stickers. Turn it back over and pop it off. There should be one small screw holding the HD case in, and 2 (or 3) holding the dvd drive in.

You will have to remove the rubber footings as well as the serial # sticker off the bottom of your Xbox. That should reveal the screws you need to get to.

Yup, I don't think many people care at this point as alot of first gen Xboxs have been without warranty for over a year now.

The big problem is people buying them, screwing up a chip install and trying to return them to the vendor they bought them from... I had it happen to me several times while working @ Gamestop.

Attention retarded modders - gamestore guys usually know more than you. :Q

Thx - I opened the bitch and realized that MS uses some fvcky ass screw setup and I'll be damned if not one of the 30 heads I have in my toolbox would let me get to the hardrive (I think it needs to come out prior to the DVD drive). I am going to just get a can of compressed air. If that doesn't work I'll take a sledge to the xbox and be done with it.

That screw is just a normal torx screw iirc - it was for both of the 2 XBox's I have opened. You're talking about the one in the center on the left hand side of the HD casing right?

Yeah who the hell uses torz screws! I was able to use a small flathead screwdriver to open the case, but the little one on the hardrive wouldn't even open with a blowtorch.

Well I don't know what was wrong with philips. Damnit, why are there so many different screw types? Can't they just scientifically determine which is best and stick with it?

They use them because they don't want your average joe tinkering with their box. Hint hint, nudge nudge :) ;)

I had a similar problem with my xbox it would just have disc errors ad take forever to load. When I played a DVD it also skipped and stuttered frames. I just found a new xbox dvd drive on ebay took my old one out and put the new one in. There are actually three manufacturers of the xbox dvd drive, smasung being the best, phillips being better, and thompson a POS. The one originally in my xbox drive was a thompson and i replaced it with a thomspon as i couldn't find a better model but it is working fine so far (~6-7 months). You can buy a new drive from ebay or various xbox forums. The inbstallation is relatively easy, very similar to ocmputer.

I can tell you how to fix it.. But please take this warning seriously.

*****WARNING*****
If you follow my directions, you will have a working xbox, but your warranty will be gone. So think twice.
*****WARNING*****

The reason it is doing this is because you probably have a Thompson DVD drive and they are well known to be picky. Here is exactly what you need to do.

1) Open The Xbox
2) Tweak Your POT

If you are still having problems, I suggest:
1) Buy a replacement Sanyo or Phillips Xbox DVD off Ebay.
-or-
2) If you want to get some good use out of that soldering iron you have in your junk drawer Mod a Samsung SD-616T or SD-616F (By far the best choice, but hard to do)
