Xbox help needed ( hope the mods don't mind )

i am trying to hook my Xbox up to my stereo reciever ( it is dolby 5.1 ) via RCA cables instead of the TOS link cable till i can afford that setup but it is all static, sounds horrible. is it impossible to hook up that way? i am just using a line in on the reciever. i hook the Xbox to my TV and it is fine. please tell me there is a way to do this till i can afford the TOS link setup. thanx
