The xbox dvd player is not very good. I thought the newer ones had progressive scan? My roommate's doesn't.

Yes, but you will need to do some very minor hex editing on the default.xbe file of the program called DVDX2. See this thread here on what to edit: ProScan Tutorial

[edit] I've done it to mine and it works quite well.

Regardless of whether or not it's prog. scan, it's not going to be HDTV quality, as HD has considerably more "information" than a DVD.

But good luck either way...and just get a stand-alone DVD player. You got such a nice deal on that Sammy, you should treat it better. :p

yay thanks,
is 480p the max DVDS have, or would a normal progressive scan dvd player work better?

A proscan DVD player will play at the same resolution that the XBOX will. Some people use PCs or video scalers to play DVDs at higher resolutions, but it's just scaling... DVDs don't actually have additional video information to use.

You can buy DVD players with better video quality, but I think the XBOX looks pretty good. I have both a proscan DVD player and my XBOX and have compared them directly.

Since you already have your XBOX modded it won't cost anything to get DVDX2 and edit it to play DVDs in proscan. So just give it a shot and see if you like the result. If not, you can then start looking at standard proscan DVD players.

My Xbox plays at 480P but the Picture Quality is horrible

Are you sure you have everything calibrated correctly? Mine seems to play back with pretty good quality.

wow cool, i didn't know about the hex editing. Going to go edit my DVDX2 now.

On a side note, I'm disappointed in the lack of HDTV games for the Xbox. I bought my HD pack without doing the research assuming that there were a bunch of HDTV games out there. I for one thought that Ninja Gaiden would support 720 at least. But to date I think there are less than 15 that support 720.

I have vertical bars running up and down the screen. They sort of have a red tint to them. Moded xbox patched to display progressive. Games don't have this problem.
