Xbox HDMI question

So, i have my xbox hooked up to my receiver via hdmi. The problem is that my receiver wont strip the audio out, and play it thru my surround sound. It just passes it thru to the tv. So, i have been trying to figure out how to get this thing to play my hdmi audio, and thought of using the original connector (non hdmi) on the back of my xbox just for the optical audio hookup. It wont go on there while my hdmi cable is plugged in. Does anyone have this same issue? Is there anything I can do about it short of getting a new receiver, or using the original component connection? My receiver wont upscale either...

Yeah, I went the cheap route, and also had to slice some of the sheath of the HDMI cable's plug to make it fit. Then I just used electrical tape to keep everything together as a unit. Works perfectly well.

Well, I decided to go away from it and go back to the component adapter with optical audio. I just need another optical cable for my br player now. I just had to go up to radio shack and get a component cable adapter to put two of them together to reach to my tv after going under my house. Works like a champ. It also freed up a hdmi spot on my receiver for my HTPC box. This makes it sooo much better.
