xbox hd-dvd player

its supposed to cost 200 bucks...so if you get the premium console and the player, its going to equal the same as a ps3 right? Why are both of these consoles so expensive?

Becuase an equivalent PC is $600+ without the HD-DV or Blu-ray drive.

MS and Sony sell these machines at a loss, to make money on per-copy license fees for the games.

Just what I need, another box to sit on top of my XBOX360 (already added a second portable hard drive).

Talk about a waste. I wish I could just replace the 20GB drive with a bigger notebook hard drive, and replace the internal DVD-ROM with an HD-DVD-ROM.

Music, movies, extra storage. I don't want to re-rip all my music onto the included puny hard drive.

Huh, I can't get my either of my external drives to work with my xbox. I can get all my USB flash drives to work though. What am I doing wrong?

Probably didn't format it correctly. Needs to be a FAT32 partition, and for larger drives you'll need to use a utility to format the entire thing correctly (XP has a limit for single large FAT32 partitions).

What's wrong with just serving it up from your computer? It works great for me.

And I'd rather keep my XBOX NIC occupied with Live! traffic only.

That's the conflict between Sony and Microsoft.

Sony says, "Everyone will prefer the PS3 because it already has HD capabilities. The console is powerful enough to last for the next 10 years just like the PS2 before it."

Microsoft says, "Everyone will prefer the Xbox 360 because it's cheaper. If you want to upgrade and have HD content, that's your choice; buy our HD-DVD upgrade. We're versatile like that."

To be honest, the PS3 is a slick deal (especially a year from now when it drops $100 in price) if you're looking for high definition content. Microsoft should have dropped the HD-DVD add-on to $150 so that it would still be cheaper overall than the PS3.

Exactly. IF you are looking for the HD content. The problem here is that you are forced to pay for the technology they back/created simply because they know that the only way they will win this war is through the PS3. That alone is enough to scare me away from blu-ray.

But if you are looking for HD, the PS3 is the better deal. After all, the hardware is better.

If the Xbox 360's HD-DVD attachment were only $100-$150 instead of $200, then it would probably be a better deal.
