Xbox Hard Drive won't work, need help!

Hey there, I recently brought a new 250GB hard drive for the old xbox, along with a transfer cable, so I can stop deleting stuff to make room on my 20GB hard drive. I'm not sure if I've done the right thing, but I plugged the Hard Drive with the transfer kit, and formatted it as a USB storage device, so I could transfer all my data through my xbox.

Now here's the problem: I cannot seem to format it back into a HDD device. When i plug it in to the top of my xbox, it does not recognise the device AT ALL. I've tried plugging and unplugging it and it still doesn't work, but it still works as a USB device. Only problem with this, is it limits the amount of space I can use for it, to about 30 GB, which is not ideal for me.

I also tried using it on my PC as a test, to transfer music files, and for some reason it doesn't work then either. The guide I followed when I got my transfer kit said that when formatting the hard drive, 3 side menus should pop up, but only one menu popped up. I'm not sure if this is related to the problem, as I'm not really interested in transfering music, but I thought I'd mention just in case. Any solutions? Thanks 🙂
