Xbox Gamertag Help

I'm not sure why I always have so much trouble with this but hopefully someone can help...

I recovered a gamertag and copied it over to a thumb drive so I could use it offline on another console in the house. Now I can't get it to let me log in using the profile from the thumb drive and I'm afraid any achievements and saved games I have will be lost if I try to recover. I'm honestly more concerned with the saved games (specifically Mass Effect 2) than anything else.

Any ideas? Is there a more logical way to do this or is the service not really geared around the idea that a person may want to play the same game under the same name in multiple locations of the same household?

FYI, it says the following when trying to sign in from the thumb drive:

The Xbox LIVE membership information isn't valid even though it specifically says it's an Xbox LIVE profile. Use a profile that contains a valid membership or recover your profile from Xbox LIVE.

Try recovering the gamertag again. Verify that it works and then move it over to the thumbdrive.

Out of curiosity, did you copy or move the gamertag to the thumbdrive? If you copied it then the gamertag you left on the console that you recovered it on is the valid gamertag. The one on the thumbdrive is not.

I'll try the 'move' method in the next day or two. To be honest it has been so long since I did it that I can't really remember which method I used but I have no doubt it was the wrong one.

I've been having fun playing USB roulette with my profile since I got a second Xbox. I will be really glad when MS rolls out that cloud profile system in the fall.
