Good luck getting away from disk media either requiring your buyers to have an internet connection that's not crap or buying a medium that costs more money to make.

I'll lawl if they go to an all digital media. It will give me enough to rant about for years until my local area has moderately fast internet service.

Laugh all you want. Digital is the way everything is going.

BTW- Steam is now worth $2 billion.

I'm not buying it. With all the effort they have gone to make the Xbox a media hub taking out the optical drive is a completely opposite direction to go. I still say they bite their lip and put a BR in it. With fast broadband not as wide spread as a lot seem to want to think in this country plus caps being more prevalent it's just a horrible idea.

i guess im the only 1 not using Steam.
theres no way digital distribution will be 100%. not with comcast capping people. not to mention people living in the middle of nowhere with no coverage.

Oh dear heyzeus, not the strictest of all NDAs! That's like the end-game level 900 raid boss of non-disclosures.

It'll never happen, but then, 256k enough etc. I hope it does, I want to open a few coffee shops in the old Gamestop stores after they close down.

Digital is the way of the future, but not the future of the next Xbox. (at least not on a digital only level a la Steam)

As I posted in the other thread -

Didn't the PSP+ tank because it was download only? I don't think this gen is ready for that.

Ack... was afraid of this. This means zero backwards compatibility, and most likely no easy "pop in a play" which was a huge selling point of consoles. If they go the download route then people are going to be furious during release days when all the servers are clogged and they can't finish the download for the first two days.

Now, this may be too far out there, but the article did say something about removeable SSDs. What if you could bring your SSD to a gamestop/bestbuy/etc, plug it into a kiosk and download that way? Something similar to a redbox setup except you provide your own media (which came with the console). You then don't have to rely on download speeds and servers, and people without internet can still play. It'd probably have proprietary connections and all that, but I think it'd be possible.

steam is good for people who have laptops, travel and don't want to carry their disks with them. once in a while i like to play a game at work during lunch on my laptop, steam is perfect

at home i'm staying with disks on my xbox. unless the games are cheaper there is no reason to go optical and lose the ability to lend/borrow games and resell

i've personally never used steam nor do i plan on ever using it. i also don't know 1 person in real life that uses steam or has used it, and i'm a software dev.

i do have e-friends who use it though.

Since I don't have a decent computer I don't use steam anymore, but if you've never used it you won't understand why it's fucking awesome. I remember when it first came out and everyone (including me) was apprehensive about it, but it really is great now. Though I don't know how well it'd work with consoles.

I was a huge steam user up until about 2006. Played CS and CS Source a ton. I am strictly console now. Not sure how this will fare but I suppose I'll give it a shot when it comes out...

Not true. That would be the dumbest thing MS could do considering most people have shit Internet connections. No way are you downloading 30gb in a reasonable amount of time.

Best solution would be to include an optical drive and have each game disc come with a unique identifier. Once you load the disc, you register the game with your online ID and at that point the game is tied to you. You can then install the FULL game to your hard drive where it could then be played without having to use the disc. Best of both worlds. This will cut down on damaged discs and also give you the convenience of selecting a game right from your couch.

Nothing like a Christmas present for a kid that's a download code in a box and waiting for 8 hours while Halo 12 downloads to play it.

Yay...progress!

So basically registration codes that that have been in use in PC's for decades?

Nah. Too logical!

Not to mention if you are going through the trouble of giving users a disc to put in the drive for "authentication", might as well just put the whole damn game on it.

You're an idiot, thanks for identifying yourself.

You probably said the same thing when CDs went out of style. People prefer digital, get over it and stop living in the boonies if you care that much.

It might not happen this generation, but its coming for sure.

Eh, stamping so many discs that will only be used once sounds like a waste to me. I think we should get past what PCs have been doing for decades.
