Hello world,

I have an original model of the XBOX (not the 360...i'm old skool). I've been trying forever to get EVO on it, but the xbox won't read any of my media. i tried 3 different cd-rws and a dvd-r. I have downloaded the dashboard installation files and all, but xbox just won't read any media. And it has the Samsung dvd drive, which is supposed to read pretty much anything. I know for sure that everything else on the xbox works properly. Also, when i try to burn an ISO using nero 7 to a cd-rw, there is no option to select speed. It just automatically selects the maximum speed that the cdrw is rated at (10x in this case) and won't let me drop it down. Any suggestions on how i can change the burn speed? Or any suggestions on wtf it won't read any of my media@@#@@??? Thanks.

Do a softmod with Softmod Installer Deluxe (or similiar), a memory card, and a copy of 007 Agent Under Fire, Mechassault, or Splinter Cell. No CD/DVD burning required.

Do this then get XBMC.

Like the others said, you have to mod the Xbox before it will read ANY burned discs. The Samsung drive will only read burned media AFTER you mod it (assuming you haven't already).

thanks for the advice. seems like xbmc is the answer. i do have the modchip installed and it definitely works since i've already played games that have been "backed up". since i don't feel like buying any of the games that would work for the softmod, i checked out xbmc online. but i didn't see any instructions on how to install it on the xbox on their site, and the only thing i found that looked like what i need was the source code for the latest release that i can download. any good links to tutorials on how to actually install xbmc on the xbox? thanks again!

yeh, i think there's something wrong with the media though, not what i'm burning. when you burn cd-rws with nero 7, are you guys able to change the burn speed?? i think that may be my problem, that it's burning it too fast and it's not readable because of it.

if your system can read backed up games, then it should be able to read other burned media too

one of my xbox's is an original and it won't read cd's if my life depended on it. The only media it would read are old 2.4x memorex dvd-rw's. I tried close to 15 different brands of cd-rw's and not a single one would boot after i had done my softmod. I finally tried an old dvd-rw and the xbox booted the media first try.

damn, i didn't think people use evox anymore. do you have a network? just ftp from your computer. most modchips allow that without a dash.

Ahh EvoX, the good old days. I still have my CD somewhere, what was it, build 3974 or something?

i think that's the whole point of me trying to get a dashboard. i tried just ftping into my modded xbox from my computer, but it didn't work. i tried going into the network settings on my xbox and setting the ip and all that, but i don't know what the login for my xbox is. i tried all the default passwords that people suggested in tutorials and things, but none of that worked. have you tried just ftp-ing without the dash? what was the login? thanks!

i just tried this. actually, the problem isn't it won't take the password, but it just won't connect. my router does not see the xbox connected to it, and my ftp just says "connecting to 192.168.1.73...unable to connect". i entered all the network settings into the xbox properly, but i just can't connect to it. WTF$#!@

even if you have the Samsung drive, i know some of them are picky on media

I burnt my EVOX install disc with DVD-R only. It will simply refuse to read any CD media
try with DVD-R or DVD+R, if both fails, i dunno, softmod?

edit: just saw the last post. see if you can provide a static IP from evox and make sure your DNS Server is your router IP. subnet 255.255.255.0, if you can ping it, you can access it

So you have a mod chip but no dashboard at all, correct? Maybe Im wrong, but I thought you cant FTP into your box without something like evox, because without that your xbox doesnt have an FTP client on it. If you have already had success running burned media on your xbox, than you must be doing something wrong when burning the evox auto installer to the cd. When I did mine, I burned hte auto installer, put in the cd and it started right up. I was able to boot off the cd and while still running off hte cd, FTP into the xbox and install everything I needed.

It depends on the modchip/firmware you run. Newer/nicer ones run a ftp server so you can ftp the dashboard.

OP what ftp client are you using, for some reason filezilla gave me a lot of problems.

i was trying to connect with filezilla too. didn't even think to try another ftp client. but i bought the cheaper version of the modchip, so i'm pretty sure it doesn't come with the ftp built in. i wasn't burning the auto installer before, just some files for manual evox that were supposedly bootable. i'm downloading the auto installer now though.

when you burn your autoinstaller cdrw (say...in nero 7), should you be able to change the burn speed? or does nero automatically select a speed? when i tried burning the files to my cd-rw before, nero would not allow me to select any speed at all, so i had to burn at whatever the cd-rw was rated at max. is there somethign wrong with nero or my burner? i tried downloading some free iso burning program, but that also did not let me select a burn speed. maybe if i could burn it at 1x, then the xbox would read it.
