Well, if you're gonna use your Xbox as a DVD player, go for the Sam's Club version. I think that kit is like $25-$30

You can mod (read: hack) an xbox so it can be a media station . . . you're kinda new to this, aren't ya?

I think you can do better. Some rental places give you some free rentals with purchase, for example.

You never have to just accept retail price as a good deal.

If you want to be able to watch DVDs on the xbox and would like an extra controller, then get the sams package.

Basically, since the xbox is simply a basic PC, a lot of people have replaced the 8 gig HD that's in Xbox, put in some larger-size HD, and put in different system OS (you have to install a chip that allows that, btw), and it'll unlock media capabilities, like allow divx feedback and mp3 play, for instance, and backup their games onto the HD without the need for the actual dvd/cd to be in there.

btw, I'm not advocating piracy, I'm just saying what it can do.

One thing, however - if you log onto xbox live with this thing on, the server will detect your altered settins and ban your system from its servers permanently. Depends on what you want to do with your xbox, I suppose.

Seems like an obvious answer, no?

Indeed..

No modding seems like the obvious answer :p. Who would want an unmodded xbox anyway?

Answering your question, ppl who want to play on Xbox live online without getting banned?

Well yea, if you want xbox live, then modding is not a good choice for you right now. But if you dont want live, its modding ALL the way :p

Mod'ing has nothing to do with XBox live depending on how you mod. Mod with a chip with a toggle and play live all you want. Mod via software and then you can't.

There are some slightly better deals, but they are all sold out right now.
Even the standard holiday bundle (xbox, 1 controller, 2 games) for $149.99 is sold out at many stores.

Target and Walmart both had the holiday bundle with a bonus third game, but they are out of stock online and at my local stores. They are both out of stock on the regular two game bundle as well.

Gamecrazy stores (in Hollywood Video) are supposed to have the $149.99 bundle that also comes with 12 free rentals, but the one in my town is sold out of those as well.

I've heard that people with toggle switches are getting banned too.

Me. I guess I just don't see anything that I'd (personally) get out of a modded Xbox.

99.9% of the people who mod their xbox's do it for the sole purpose of pirating games.

I won't claim to be perfect, but I'm certainly not going to teach my kids that stealing software is ok, so I have no reason to want to mod an xbox.
